Westfield votes ‘yes’ on $5.2M school project

WESTFIELD — Westfield Academy and Central residents have approved the capital improvement project that Westfield Superintendent David Davison proposed in November. The votes came in at 9 p.m. Thursday with totals of 216 voters for the project budget and 22 voters against the budget.

The project proposal includes two sections in it. One of the sections is “code-required items” that are mandatory, such as ventilation, life safety, health code requirements, doors and hardware, and ADA accessibility. These repairs and replacements will spend about $1.5 million of the budget.

The remainder of the budget, which is $3.7 million, will be spent on “priority one” items which include roofing, heat pump replacement and repair, exhaust fans, windows in the elementary school and upgrading the PA system.

All of these plans for repairs and replacements are following a 12-month study of the district’s buildings and grounds. The study was completed by Matt Sikora of Turner construction and Scott Jones of architectural firm Gordon W. Jones Associates. They then recommended the chosen repairs and replacements.

The main funding, 80%, of the project is provided by project aid and the remaining 20% is funded by the capital project reserve fund. According to Jones, this project will be completed without using taxpayers’ money.

After the vote, Davison said, “I’d like to thank the community for their support for the project. We need this to do some critical updates to the building.”
