County’s positive cases go up to 18

Five more positive coronavirus cases were reported in Chautauqua County on Saturday and Sunday. The Chautauqua County Health Department reported these cases involve a male in his 30s, a male in his 70s, and three females in their 50s.

The latest cases, according to the county map, come from the north and eastern portion of the county. North county cases are now at 12, with south county cases at four and two in the east. There are no known cases on the map in the western area that makes up Ripley, Brocton and Chautauqua.

It brings the county total to 18 with 12 active cases of area residents who continue to recover under orders of the Local Health Official per state Public Health Law. Five people have recovered while one person has died.

In addition, 180 tests have been negative with 97 cases under quarantine and isolation orders by the Public Health Director and being monitored. Not all of those being monitored are confirmed to have COVID-19 but have either shown symptoms, are awaiting results, or have risk factors.

County officials issued this reminder as well on Saturday: “Testing supplies and PPE (used when doing a test and treating infected patients) continue to be in low supply across the state and especially in rural areas where population density is low. At this time, tests MUST BE prioritized for hospitalized patients, ill healthcare workers, and those who have underlying health conditions. Currently there are three locations in Chautauqua County where outpatient testing is performed: UPMC’s Jones Hill Center; The Chautauqua Center in Jamestown and Dunkirk.

“Testing is not done without a healthcare provider’s order.

“Federal and state officials are now recommending the wearing of homemade masks or scarves by the general public. This act will protect the public from your respiratory droplets. It is now estimated that 30% of those infected with coronavirus don’t know they are infected. This is one more step to try and decrease the spread of coronavirus. Surgical masks and N-95 respirators are for healthcare workers only.”

In Cattaraugus County, one positive coronavirus case was confirmed over the weekend by the Health Department. The reporting laboratory was Wadsworth Laboratory in Albany.

A female resident who lives in the southeastern part of the county with no significant travel history was tested for COVID-19 on Friday after being in close contact with a positive COVID-19 person. She was asymptomatic (no fever, no cough, no body aches). On Saturday, her test indicated that she was positive for COVID-19.

The patient is resting at home, and now under quarantine with her family. She will be assessed for any medical support that we can provide and we will monitor her symptoms closely.
