City continues reduction of workforce

Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas mentioned at the last Common Council meeting that the city is still operating at 50% staff in the building.

“With this COVID-19 situation, as you know, we are still in a state of emergency per the orders of the governor,” Rosas said. “We cannot bring these folks back. We have 50% of our staff working. We have to obey that order. As far as bringing people back we are waiting for the governor to give the OK on that.”

The current employees still actively working at City Hall include the city clerk, the assessor, three people in the treasurer’s office due to billing and such, the fiscal affairs officer and the city attorney. Other than these individuals, the rest are working from home with occasional check-ins at the building. Police and fire department members also are essential and continue to work their shifts.

The city of Dunkirk, like other municipalities throughout the state have been facing the in house staffing decrease since the executive order came down in March, and no one is sure when they will be able to return to their pre pandemic employment situation.

“Everybody is going through this,” Rosas told the OBSERVER this week. “We’re following recommendations to the best of our ability.”
