Pride of Dunkirk

Boxer continues to make his mark in ring

Submitted Photo Dunkirk’s Elon DeJesus is scheduled to box again in February.

With two more fights under his belt, both of which came with a bit of the national spotlight, Dunkirk boxer Elon DeJesus isn’t letting anything go to his head. And although the two decisions against Rajon Chance didn’t go his way, DeJesus is pleased with his performance thus far.

In his first bout against Chance, they fought to a draw that ended up being a little controversial. DeJesus said numerous people told him they believed he should have won, so the second time around, DeJesus knew he had to do more to try and win. And although the judges gave Chance the win again, DeJesus felt like he rounded the corner in the second half of the fight, and knows that no matter what, it served as good exposure for him.

“I get stronger as the fight goes on,” DeJesus said. “The second fight played out kind of like the first one, I felt like I dominated in the second half of the fight again but the judges gave him the win. Overall, it’s good exposure for me, and I’ll bounce back in February.”

February is when DeJesus will next be in the ring, and although he doesn’t know his opponent yet, he knows his keys to success. With the attention he’s received from fighting on national television in September to then fighting on Christmas Day at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, DeJesus is doing his best to stay true to himself.

“I have to stay humble,” DeJesus said. “I don’t really let any of the attention get to my head. I’m a family guy, so I stay with those who truly love me.”

With his latest fight only briefly in his rearview mirror, DeJesus is already breaking down things he has to do to improve. Even though his last two fights came against the same opponent, there are still valuable lessons he can learn from his experiences to help prepare him for his next bout.

“Each and every fight since I was an amateur, I’ve learned something about myself and my fighting style,” DeJesus said. “I think I have to continue to keep working on my boxing skills. Physically, I’m the stronger guy a lot of the time and with me working on my boxing skills, I can only get better.

Next fight and as I go on in my career, you’ll definitely see a more skilled boxer.”

DeJesus is coming up on a year of being signed with his management team, BoxLab, which has really helped him take the latest steps of his career. Because of that, he was able to have a true training camp, which has helped him on that path to improvement. His management team has also helped him learn some valuable lessons when it comes to boxing.

“You just have to learn to be patient with the process and keep moving forward,” DeJesus said. “There are lots of setbacks, but you can’t dwell on the past. If you dwell on the past there is no room for improvement. You have to keep moving forward in life.”

DeJesus has been home with his family for the last couple days, but for the most part, he spends his time alone in Florida, where he secludes himself and focuses on discipline and his craft. But that situation is also something that should be changing in his favor soon.

“It’s tough being away from my fiancÈ, my kids and family but it’s best when I’m able to focus on the fight,” he said. “The plans are to move to Florida soon so going forward they’ll be with me. Mentally, that’ll be so much better for me than being away from them.”

As DeJesus moves forward, he knows he has a lot of support, all of which he is grateful for. He has the support of BoxLab, his trainers, his family, and the Dunkirk community. DeJesus said it means a lot to him to see his hometown rallying to support him.

“A lot of people watched the fight and I appreciate all the support from people around town and everywhere,” DeJesus said.
