Zonta Club of Jamestown met in the spring to honor its 2021 and 2022 scholarship recipients. Annika Spitzer received a $1,000 Nell Newton Scholarship, awarded to a young woman pursuing a career in business. Currently a senior at Jamestown High School, Annika will attend St. Bonaventure University in the fall to study public relations and media management.

Morgan Torrey, a senior at Jamestown High School, received one of two $1,000 Mary Barger Scholarships which are awarded to young women planning on professional careers. Morgan will attend SUNY Brockport majoring in physical therapy.

Genesis Cosme is graduating from Dunkirk High School and also received a Mary Barger Scholarship. She will attend Jamestown Community College’s School of Nursing, hoping one day to work in neonatal care.

Lily Melquist, a second year student at SUNY Fredonia, is a theater arts major and is in the honors program, received a $1,000 Verna Nelson Scholarship. This award is presented to a young woman entering her third or fourth year of undergraduate studies and is endowed at and selected by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. This award is based on academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Unfortunately, two other 2021 honorees were unable to be present at Zonta’s awards recognition. Shantell Phelps was selected by the Community Foundation as a $1,000 Verna Nelson Scholarship winner, as well. Madison Mathews received a $1,000 Anne H. Crowe Scholarship, presented to a woman returning to school after an absence, so she might prepare herself for better career opportunities.
