Three members of the Fredonia High School graduating class received the Ricky Burgstrom Music and Bowling Scholarship.

According to his parents, Rick and Brenda Burgstrom, Ricky was a typical student complaining about school but always ready, prepared and on time for class.

He was a lifelong learner but took pride in being diverse and open to a challenge. He was an honors student who completed the 3-1-3 program at Fredonia State University and was a candidate for August graduation at Canisius College with his MBA. Ricky was motivated working part-time at Rite Aid, being a licensed Real Estate Agent and most importantly starting his own business “Burgers Kicks.”

Burgers Kicks was a successful business that introduced Burgstrom to the “Sneakers Community.”

“He prided himself in friendships,” his parents said.

“He saw the good in everyone and developed a vast network of contacts throughout the United States and the world. The generosity of these people has led to the establishment of three scholarships The Selection Committee was asked to identify individuals that went beyond being a high school student. We looked for student learners that displayed ‘leadership through example.’ ”

All three of these students selected “are a great reflection of the quality of this graduating class,” the Burgstroms said.

¯ Erin Elizabeth Schrantz wrote about her experience involving the Volleyball team and the acknowledgement that she received for her “picking up my teammates and pushing them to keep going.” Her closing statement was “Make your mark one that brings light into the world.”

¯ Benjamin William Morrow wrote about his experiences with the youth at Russell Joy Park. He noted that it is essential to always be “exceedingly friendly and welcoming.”

¯ Fred Edward Gullo’s opening paragraph stated, “It seems a bit conflicting to write an essay with the purpose of showcasing my attributes of modesty and kindness. It is also humbling to write an essay for a scholarship in memory of such a friendly and well-liked young man. Gullo discussed his participation as a player/coach in Unified Basketball and his advisement of the importance of “being patient and kind to everyone.”
