UPDATE: Crews respond to fatal accident in city

It appears a vehicle being driven recklessly on Central Avenue could be the cause of a horrific four-vehicle crash in the city of Dunkirk on Thursday afternoon that is now a fatal accident.

According to witnesses, the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed while weaving through traffic before striking at least three others. One of those vehicles apparently caught fire at around 5:50 p.m.

Onlookers watched in disbelief at the scene near Central and Howard avenues under the bridge used for train traffic. Dunkirk police and fire departments were first on the scene. Fredonia Fire Department and Chautauqua County Emergency Medical Services and Alstar ambulance also assisted.

Central Avenue was closed due to the accident and crews were expected to be on the scene through the night for the investigation.
