Lakewood man killed after vehicle hits bus

CHARLOTTE — A Lakewood male was killed after his vehicle collided head on with a USA Coach Bus Monday morning.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Justin L. Romaniuk, 20, was traveling south on Route 60 around 9 a.m. when his vehicle, for an unknown reason, crossed into the northbound lane, where he hit the coach bus, operated by Debra Lee Grimes, 61, of Lakewood.

Romaniuk, who was a University at Buffalo college student, was pinned in his vehicle and had to be  cut out. He suffered serious blunt force injuries and died at the scene.

Grimes was also pinned in the bus. She had to be freed by the Jaws of Life by fire rescue personnel. She was transported to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace said there were also three passengers on the bus.

“One of the passengers on the bus was not injured and signed off. … The passengers that were treated — going by early assessment — were not believed to (have) life threatening (injuries),” he said.

Route 60 was closed in Charlotte between Sylvester Road and Jamestown Street for about four hours. The crash is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office, the coroner’s office and the New York State Police truck enforcement unit.

No charges are expected against Grimes.

Sinclairville Fire and Rescue, Gerry Rescue, Cassadaga Rescue and Alstar Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
