New event coming to Fredonia

Fredonia’s getting a new downtown event.

The Farm to Table Community Dinner was approved by the village Board of Trustees at a recent meeting. It will take place Saturday, Sept. 28 in Barker Common from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event is a collaboration between the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce and the Fredonia Farmer’s Market. It will feature chefs from Fredonia restaurants cooking locally-sourced items, and area wineries and breweries will sell samples. The resolution passed by trustees suspends the village open container law in Barker Common for the duration of the event, so people can legally consume the beverages.

The resolution also states the Chamber and the Farmer’s Market “will set up tables and chairs, along with tents, and the restaurants will set up portable cooking equipment on Church Street so that the chefs can prepare the meals and the participants (can) prepare the meals.”

In addition, the village will “allow for space within Barker Common East for jazz musicians to perform during the event, as well as event sponsors set up information tables to market their company.”

Trustee Kara Christina said, “A lot of people have been working together on this … I hope that people know it’s going to be wonderful, and I pray for good weather.”

Larry Fiorella, head of Festivals Fredonia and also Chamber of Commerce treasurer, told the OBSERVER four chefs will be partnered with four farms from the Fredonia Farmer’s market, which will provide them all the ingredients they need from locally-sourced items.

“It will presented in Church Street on long tables which will accommodate 100 people each,” he said. “They’ll get a chance to talk about what they’ve made. We’ll bring in 21 Brix to pair wine with the food and EBC West will pair beers with the food.”

It will be a four course meal: in each course, the food will come, the chefs will talk, then the wine and beer samples will get discussed. The menu is still getting worked on.

Fiorella said the Fredonia High School and SUNY Fredonia jazz bands will play at the event. The nearby Opera House will be screening “the Biggest Little Farm” after the meal is finished and Farm to Table attendees will get a discount voucher for a ticket to the movie.

“Some of the stuff is still up in the air, but I think the bones is pretty good,” Fiorella said. “Now it’s just the execution of each of the pieces.”

Tickets are on sale on the Chamber website. Fiorella said in case of rain it will be at the Beaver Club. The event is sponsored by the Beaver Club and presented by the Chamber, the Farmer’s Market and Fredonia Grange No. 1, he added.
