Census reveals sharp declines in county

There’s more bad news than good in the most recent U.S. Census figures.

Chautauqua County’s population decreased by 5.4% from 2010 to 2020, according to numbers released on Thursday. In the meantime, neighboring Erie County saw an increase of 3.8% over that same time period reaching 954,238.

Overall, Chautauqua County lost 7,248 residents over the 10-year span dropping from 134,908 to 127,659. There was, however, some bright spots. One was the city of Dunkirk, which appears to have some momentum in the north county as there were 180 more residents counted — a total of 12,743 — in 2020 when compared to 2010.

Jamestown, however, lost 2,434 residents to 28,712 — a 7.8% decrease over that same span.

Another major decline was seen in the village of Fredonia, which went from 11,230 residents in 2010 to 9,585 in 2020 — a 14.6% loss. Census officials in the past have noted that student population at the State University of New York at Fredonia is taken into account when doing the numbers.

Lower enrollments in recent years, obviously, have impacted village numbers as well as the town of Pomfret. There, numbers declined from 14,965 to 13,035 in 2020.

Other area municipalities, with 5,000 residents or more included:

¯ Busti, which increased to 7,543 from 7,351.

¯ Ellicott at 8,768 from 8,714 in 2010.

¯ Hanover at 6,972 from 7,127 in 2010.

Other Southern Tier counties also saw declines. Cattaraugus was down 3,275 to 77,042 and Allegany lost 2,490 residents at 46,456.

Chautauqua County’s population loss was the second highest in Western New York by percentage. The only location higher was Orleans County, which lost 5.9%.

New York state, despite upstate county declines, gained 823,147 residents over the decade to 20,201,249 and is fourth behind California, Texas and Florida. Despite that increase, it still will be losing one Congressional representative.
