Fredonia reverses charter changes

Fredonia’s Board of Trustees has reversed laws that changed the description of its duties in the village charter and created an “advisory” team of the treasurer, clerk and personnel specialist.

The board voted unanimously last week to enact laws that changed the charter back to the way it was before last fall. The previous Board of Trustees, led by now-departed members EvaDawn Bashaw, Roger Britz and Scott Johnston, had made the changes.

The only speaker at the required public hearings for the laws passed Monday was Sam Drayo.

The former village attorney made a brief remark supporting the reversals. Drayo had much more to say last year when the changes were getting debated, offering lengthy and in-depth criticisms of the proposals.

The only current trustee who was on the board last year was James Lynden. He alleged that trustees debated the charter alterations at what was supposed to be a retreat in April. Lynden and Drayo both said that meant the trustees held an illegal meeting, because they are not supposed to talk about public business at a retreat.

Starting at $3.50/week.
