City man is named radio club president

Dunkirk resident Jose Nieves has been elected president of the Northern Chautauqua Amateur Radio Club.

Dunkirk resident Jose Nieves has been elected president of the Northern Chautauqua Amateur Radio Club.

Nieves uses his telecommunications skills to regularly communicate with people around the world via radio. His term of office was confirmed at the February meeting of club. Nieves stated that he is proud to assume the position and hopes to help NCARC expand their membership as well helping continue the tradition of amateur radio serving the north county.

Nieves became a “ham” radio operator in 2010 after being inspired by his father and brother who were both avid radio enthusiasts. Joe obtained his federal license as a way of honoring is father after his father’s death.

NCARC collaborates with the Chautauqua County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service in providing radio operators and equipment in the event government agencies and community service organizations require additional support during emergencies. NCARC is an affiliated club of the American Radio Relay League.

The Northern Chautauqua Amateur Radio Club meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the SUNY Fredonia Incubator at 214 Central Ave. in Dunkirk. The meeting is open to all interested in radio communication and assistance is provided in achieving an amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communication Commission.
