FULL OF GLORY: Flags fly in Cassadaga

Memorial Day was established to honor and remember those who fought so that we could have the freedom we enjoy. After the Civil War had ended, people were encouraged to decorate graves with flowers as a time of remembrance. The day was first known as Decoration Day, but was changed to Memorial Day after World War I, so that it was a remembrance day of all wars of the United States. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson designated Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1971, Memorial Day was established to be a National holiday by the act of Congress, and placed on the last Monday in May. In Cassadaga, the American Legion Post 1280 under the direction of past Commander Bruce Kaus, 253 American Flags were placed on posts around the village. The American Flags which are given in memory of others were installed this last weekend and will remain there most of the summer. American Flags will also be put on Veterans’ graves in the surrounding cemeteries. This is a time of remembrance for all of us.
