County approves grants for airport projects

MAYVILLE — More work will be taking place at both of the county airports.

During the most recent Chautauqua County Legislature meeting, lawmakers backed resolutions to rehabilitate a taxiway at the Dunkirk airport and to replace 34 airfield guidance signs at the Jamestown airport.

The Dunkirk airport project will cost $679,265, with the federal government paying for 90%, the state paying for 5% and the county paying for the remaining 5%. The county’s portion will be $33,964.

The airfield guidance signs project will cost $86,700, with the federal government paying 90%, the state paying 5% and the county paying for the remaining 5%, which will be $4,335.

Legislator Elisabeth Rankin, R-Jamestown, expressed her support. “As part of the critical infrastructure in Chautauqua County, it’s important to support this for the two airports,” she said.

During committee meetings the week prior, Shannon Barnhart, manager of the county airports, said their guidance signs are in poor conditions and they have been docked multiple times during inspections by the Federal Aviation Administration.

At the Audit and Control Committee meeting Legislator Bob Scudder, R-Fredonia, voted against the resolutions. He was not in attendance at the full meeting Wednesday.

The 18 legislators in attendance unanimously passed the resolutions.

Starting at $2.99/week.
