Deputy clerk leaves town to assist city

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Town Clerk Rebecca Yacklon, pictured, will soon have a new Deputy Clerk to work with for the fourth time in less than three years.

For the fourth time in less than three years, the town of Dunkirk will be seeking a replacement for the role of Deputy Clerk. Jennifer Jakubowski has resigned from the role to pursue an opportunity with the city of Dunkirk.

Jakubowski replaced Emma Newton in November to work alongside Town Clerk Rebecca Yacklon. Jakubowski said in her letter of resignation that she struggled with the decision to resign because she enjoyed her time with the town.

“I have witnessed what it takes to run a municipality effectively, and the positive impact it has on the residents who are fortunate to call this town home,” Jakubowski said.

Jakubowski, however, is a resident of the city of Dunkirk, and she feels compelled to serve her local government. She said, “I feel I can no longer sit back and watch it continue its current path.”

With her new role in the city of Dunkirk Clerk’s Office, Jakubowski said she can learn more about how to help the city. She credits her experience with the Town of Dunkirk in preparing her for the role.

While the search for a new Deputy Clerk is underway, members of the Town Board will assist Rebecca Yacklon with the duties of the Town Clerk’s office.

In the month of April, the Town Clerk’s Office collected $1,482 in revenue. A total of $860 stemmed from clerk fees, $564 in zoning fees, and $58 from dog licenses. The Justice Court handled a total of 272 cases in April, including 245 vehicle and traffic law cases, 18 penal law cases, three transportation law cases, one local law and five terminations of suspensions. A total of $19,946 was collected by the Justice Court for distribution.

The Town also received its second quarter sales tax distribution in the amount of $102,930.06. Of that amount, 60% is allocated to the General Fund and 40% to the Highway Fund. Supervisor Shari Miller stated the sales tax revenue is lower this year than it was at the same time a year ago.

Miller also recognized the Town Planning Board, Zoning Board, and Code Enforcement Officer Ryan Mourer for their work over the past year. In 2025, the Town issued 31 residential permits and 18 commercial permits, while seven projects were brought to the Zoning Board and four projects were brought to the Planning Board for site plan review. Most notably among the recent projects is the Chipotle restaurant currently under construction on Vineyard Drive. The Town Board has been impressed at the progress of the construction in recent weeks.

The next Town Board meeting was moved to Tuesday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. A workshop will be held on Friday, May 29 at 3 p.m. with no action to be taken.

Starting at $3.50/week.
