High-speed chase comes to close in Fredonia

Fredonia Fire Department responds to the accident in this submitted photo.

A fiery car crash occurred early Monday morning in the village of Fredonia after a high-speed chase that began in Dunkirk came to an end.

According to a witness, the car crashed near One Temple Square and burst into flames. Two police officers jumped into the burning car and rescued a victim, who was taken with non-life threatening injuries to Brooks-TLC Hospital in Dunkirk.

A witness said the car appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed south on Central Avenue and did not stop at the Temple Street and Central Avenue intersection.

Firefighters were on scene soon after and quickly extinguished the blaze.

According to scanner reports, the incident occurred before 2 a.m. and both Fredonia Police and Fire Department responded as well as Dunkirk Police.

A Dunkirk police vehicle is seen in this submitted photo at the accident.

Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano said the incident began when city officers pulled over a vehicle for a traffic infraction on Third Street. It then sped away, striking a parked vehicle before heading to Central Avenue.

Ortolano said officers suspended the chase, but the vehicle continued its high-speed drive until the crash. He said charges are pending in the incident.

Fredonia Police Department did not respond to an email on the incident
