Vote set on Fredonia water hike for Monday

Fredonia’s Board of Trustees is set to vote on a water rate hike Monday night.

The trustees have a local law on the agenda to raise the cost of water to $6.95 per $1,000 gallons used. That’s a $2 rise from the current rate.

Trustee Nicole Siracuse has said she envisions another $2 or so hike later in the year. She and Trustee Jon Espersen have stated that the village’s water business status quo is unsustainable because it costs far more to produce water than it does to use it.

Fredonia’s trustees have three more water-related resolutions on Monday’s agenda.

They are set to vote on a proposal for LaBella to prepare a groundwater exploration report. The resolution authorizes up to $27,400 for the report.

LaBella, the village’s Rochester-based engineer of record, prepared a study of Fredonia’s water options in 2023 that included a suggestion of groundwater source exploration.

That was presented as part of a plan to get water from other sources than the current reservoir — mainly the city of Dunkirk. Trustees, including Espersen and Siracuse, voted 3-2 on Dec. 26 to explore that option.

The other items authorize Allen Marine Services of Tonawanda to remove the clearwell sediment debris treatment plant, at a cost not to exceed $19,800; and a budget transfer to pay for that.
