Fredonia prepares for capital project meeting

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Fredonia Board of Education members Sheila Hahn, left, and Lisa Powell Fortna, right, listened to public comments at a recent public forum to discuss capital improvements to Fredonia’s facilities. The Board will learn more regarding its potential facilities upgrades at an upcoming meeting with Young and Wright Architectural representatives, April 23 at 4 p.m.

More information is on its way when it comes to the topic on many District stakeholders’ minds in Fredonia.

The Fredonia Central School District and members of the Board of Education will meet again with Young and Wright Architectural representatives at 4 p.m., April 23, prior to the next regular Board meeting, to further discuss capital improvements to the District’s facilities. The meeting is open to the public, but is not a time for public comment.

At the meeting, Fredonia will receive the data from its topographical surveys of the District athletic fields, as well as the findings of the playground audits, the scans of building roofs, and structural review results. The District will then continue discussions on focus areas of an upcoming capital project.

Regarding the next capital outlay project, a much smaller project capped at $100,000, the District is focusing on accessibility for the playground at the main campus. Accessibility concerns at the Wheelock campus are targeted as part of a major capital project at a later date.

Additionally, the Board of Education recently approved a one-year contract renewal with Management Advisory Group, Inc., to serve as a consultant for District personnel regarding STAC services and Medicaid forms. The cost to the district is $7,903 for STAC services and $11,695 for Medicaid services.

Board of Education member Tom Hawk and Board President Brian Aldrich questioned if the services could be handled by the Business Administration Office within the District, but it was deemed more beneficial for the District to proceed with Management Advisory Group, like it has in the past. The service identifies substantial amounts of aid to reimburse the District.

“We’re paying money to save money,” Board of Education Vice President Steven Johnston said.

The Board also passed a resolution to appoint Karen Drummond and a committee of her choosing to represent the District in participation for cooperative bidding through BOCES.
