Seniors enrolled in the Conservation/Natural Resource Management program at the LoGuidice Educational Center recently took part in a community service project at Laona Playground near Fredonia.

Teacher Taylor Beaver, teaching assistant Ericka Tenpas, and the Town of Pomfret Highway Department organized the playground cleanup. According to Beaver and Tenpas, the site is often used by local kids and was in need of some spring maintenance.

In all, 18 seniors in the Career & Technical Education program participated in the community service project on April 18 and 19.

Work included removing leaves as well as overgrown vines on the fence surrounding the playground.

“The students learned to give back to the community,” Beaver and Tenpas said. “It helps build compassion, teamwork, and important values and works on task management.”

A few area residents stopped by to thank the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES students during the cleanup.

“This was important because it improves their job skills for the future and helps drive community improvement. It also brings the community together,” Beaver and Tenpas said. “Having a clean, safe place for the kids to play was important to us.”

Career and Technical Education programming serves students in their junior and senior years of high school, with students selecting the option to attend an E2CCB CTE program in their sophomore year. For more information, visit e2ccb.org.
