At 9:43 p.m. Tuesday, incumbent U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has issued a statement regarding her victory: “This victory makes it absolutely clear that New Yorkers believe in a government that works, and that we must put people over politics. I am committed to finding common sense solutions, which is why I always reach across the aisle to find common ground, from delivering health benefits for first responders and veterans, to taking illegal guns off the street, to bringing down costs for New York families. New Yorkers believe in fundamental truths, like caring about our neighbors and treating others with kindness, decency and respect. That has been, and will continue to be, the hallmark of my public service.”
Proposition 1 has passed in New York state. Sasha Ahuja, Campaign Director of New Yorkers for Equal Rights, issued the following statement: “Tonight is a monumental victory for all New Yorkers. Our state constitution will now protect our reproductive freedoms, including abortion, and protect every New Yorker from government discrimination, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, pregnancy status, disability status, or whether someone is LGBT.
“We were devastated when Roe v. Wade fell. But today New Yorkers protected reproductive freedom and left Roe’s limitations behind. We’re in a moment when 21 states have banned abortion. Birth control, IVF, and LGBTQ+ rights are under attack. With the passage of Prop 1, New York now has some of the strongest protections in the country to ensure the safety and freedom of all New Yorkers.”
