BROCTON — Some days are better than others for volunteer firefighters. Brocton’s department recently was a perfect example of that.

While there were 20 calls for the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department to respond to in April, one day during the month of May featured five calls. According to Village Trustee Brandy Smith, two of the five calls were simultaneous and all five occurred within approximately five hours of each other. Mayor Craig Miller, a member of the Fire Department, noted that the Village of Fredonia assisted with the workload through mutual aid, while Chautauqua County also provided assistance.

Following discussion at a previous meeting, the Village has now installed handicap parking signs on Fay Street to alleviate the need to park handicap vehicles along Route 20. Parking on Fay Street allows for a safer alternative to enter and exit a vehicle with less traffic, likely traveling at a slower speed.

Highway Superintendent Ken Becker stated while the Central Avenue waterline project has been substantially completed, the Village should evaluate the next major project. Becker stated that Highland Avenue and Main Street are areas to monitor, with Highland Avenue having more incidents to date.

“Sometime, Highland Avenue is probably going to have to have that line updated,” Becker said.

Waste Water Treatment Supervisor Rich Lewis stated there is interest in lots at the Haywood Heights development site, located atop the hill behind the Country Fair store. The Village will evaluate its ability to meet water and sewer demands of the sites.

There were five permits issued in the month of April in the village, while nine violation letters were sent out. Brocton also held a village-wide cleanup day featuring 35 participants, including students from Brocton Central School. Miller also thanked the American Legion for restoring benches across the village.

The Village Board authorized the purchase of a stainless steel V-plow from Kaminski and Sons Truck Equipment to be installed on the Waste Water Department truck. The purchase is under an Erie County bid price of $8,600, and it is covered under previously budgeted funds. Two Village of Brocton vehicles were also declared as surplus and will be put out for bids.

The Village also agreed to compensate four employees for unused vacation time. Adjustments to three residential sewer bills were approved, as well. Summer Recreation employee interviews will be held in the coming weeks.

The next meeting of the Brocton Village Board will be on Wednesday, June 18 at 6 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
