‘Vulgar nonsense’ vandalism irks Silver Creek

While one eyesore of the old Silver Creek High School continues to come down, another is on the Village’s plate due to vandalism of playground equipment. The perpetrators were caught in the act on camera.

The Village is working with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office to identify them and bring them to justice for what Mayor Jeff Hornburg called “vulgar nonsense.” Hornburg said he wants the culprits punished “to the fullest extent of the law.”

Also of note, the Village Board approved the appointment of Brianna Griewisch to the position of Labor Supervisor, effective June 8.

“I’m glad to have one of our own in that position,” Trustee Sandra Lindstrom said. Deputy Mayor Kathy Tampio called the appointment “well-deserved.”

The Board also officially adopted the resolution to form a joint fire district between the Sunset Bay and Silver Creek fire departments.

“I’m very pleased about the fire district formation. I’m pleased to support that,” Tampio said. “… I think it’s a good thing to continue the excellent standard of fire protection services we enjoy.”

The Board first adopted the resolution at a joint meeting with the Town of Hanover, but with Hornburg absent, the resolution was brought back before the Board again a week later so Hornburg could put his support on record.

“Hopefully this all works out for the good, not only for the village of Silver Creek, but the town of Hanover and the fire departments themselves,” Hornburg said. “I think that it will be a welcomed change that everybody will learn to grow with.”

The Village Board also authorized funding the Emergency Medical Services staffing payroll with $10,000 of funds accumulated through billing – separate from the general fund. A reserve account for the previously approved ambulance purchase was also established, while several budget transfers were also approved by the Board.

The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board is Monday, June 16.

Starting at $3.50/week.
