Windmills set for maintenance; Arkwright projects proceed

ARKWRIGHT — Residents of Arkwright could see increased traffic near the windmills around Meadows Road and Center Road in the coming days. Maintenance of the windmills is planned for the next week or so, according to Arkwright Highway Superintendent Lisa Waldron.

The Town has prepared the roads for heavy usage, which will consist of 28 loads in and 28 loads out to replace the bearings for the blades of the windmills. Photos have been taken of the condition of the roads before the work, and any damage will be remedied at the company’s expense, rather than the Town.

The Town has received its annual payment of over $300,000 through its host community agreement to allow the windmills in Arkwright.

“Our bank accounts are healthy. We’re in good shape to do the construction that we can get done this year, including starting our new Town Hall,” Town Supervisor Brian McAvoy said.

LaBella Associates has presented a design to the Board that will allow for professional cost estimates for the Town Hall project. McAvoy stated he hopes to have a professional cost estimate by the next regular meeting of the Board on July 14.

“I’m well-pleased,” Town Board member Larry Ball said.

McAvoy added, “They’ve done a nice job.”

A month ago, the Town approved a contract with Congdon Brothers Construction, Inc., for $90,000 for the roofing and siding on the old section of the Town Garage. The contract includes $10,000 upfront as a consultant fee, followed by progress payments based on certified payroll, and concluding with a final payment to total $90,000. The Town Board approved a change order of an additional $6,000 to assist with the purchase of workman’s compensation for the construction – minus Ball, who voted against the motion.

McAvoy has consistently stated that infrastructure and equipment upgrades are priorities for the Town. While the Town is moving forward with its construction projects, it is also looking to improve its equipment with a trailer to carry the Town’s water tank. Waldron was authorized by the Board to purchase a trailer at a cost not to exceed $6,000.

The Town Clerk’s Office collected $302 in the month of May through 17 dog licenses, 13 death certificates, a marriage certificate, and three building permits, with $262.50 turned over to the Town’s General Fund after state distribution. The Town Justice Court collected $525 through fines and surcharges to be turned over to the Town’s General Fund in the month of May.

The next meeting of the Arkwright Town Board is set for Monday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
