Baskets add beauty, pride to city

There are now 55 hanging baskets in the city of Dunkirk.
The Beautification Committee of Revitalize Dunkirk is celebrating 10 years of successfully sponsoring the city of Dunkirk hanging flower baskets found downtown on Central Avenue and East Fourth Street.
The Revitalize Dunkirk project began in 2015 with twenty baskets and quickly expanded to the current 55. A small, but determined, group of volunteers raises funds for baskets, liners, chains, brackets, fertilizer, soil, and most importantly orders the plants from a local greenhouse.
The grower starts the growing process in March in the greenhouse. Revitalize Dunkirk pays the greenhouse business per basket. Funds for this project must be raised every year. The city Department of Public Works (DPW) hangs the 55 baskets around Memorial Day. A DPW employee waters three times a week all summer.
Baskets, liners, and chains are removed in September and stored by DPW. There are no plans to expand beyond 55 baskets. We believe it is the maximum that can be cared for by DPW and paid for by Revitalize Dunkirk.
The Beautification Committee of Revitalize Dunkirk appreciates the cooperation and partnership with the city DPW. As we celebrate 10 years of beautiful hanging baskets in the city, we also marvel at what a very small, but dedicated, group of volunteers can achieve with a vision. May they be an inspiration to others to implement a small beautification project in their own neighborhood.
The Beautification Committee is currently in the midst of the 2025 Revitalize Dunkirk fundraiser to support this and other projects.
