Mayor plans discussion on repowering plant to nuclear

City of Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz on Thursday announced the first scheduled community discussion on potential repowering of the former NRG coal-burning power plant to one of the new nuclear power generating technologies for Tuesday at 6 p.m. immediately following the Common Council meeting that evening in the Council Chambers.

Wdowiasz has invited Dr. Andrew Whittaker, PhD, PE, SE, a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, from the University at Buffalo to present an informational discussion entitled, “WNY and all things nuclear,” followed by a question and answer opportunity for the public.

“We’re eager to begin this important conversation about the future of our city,” Wdowiasz said. “Repurposing the NRG site with next-generation nuclear technology has the potential to transform our local economy and secure long-term energy stability. This is just the beginning of an open and inclusive dialogue, and we welcome every voice at the table as we explore what’s possible for Dunkirk and the region.”

The presentation and discussion are open to the public and will be one of many opportunities for residents of Dunkirk and the surrounding municipalities to learn more about the new nuclear technologies and their potential to repurpose the former NRG site with nuclear power, and the economic benefits for the city of Dunkirk and Northern Chautauqua County, and to provide comment and input.

Starting at $3.50/week.
