SILVER CREEK — Residents of Buffalo Street in Silver Creek made their voices heard several times in recent years at Village Board meetings, seeking significant improvements to the road. In the coming months, the Village hopes to find out how feasible the improvements really are.

The Village is planning to meet with an engineer in the coming months to discuss substantial improvements to Buffalo Street, as requested by residents. The project is targeted for next year.

“It’s going to be quite a project,” Mayor Jeff Hornburg said, noting that the work surpasses what the Department of Public Works would handle on its own.

In terms of ongoing projects in the village, progress has been made at Memorial Park, located at the former site of Revere Inn. The site will feature a Victory Garden supported by the Silver Creek Hanover Garden Club, as well as tributes to the armed forces. Benches were acquired through grant funding provided by the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation.

The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday, July 29, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities. Volunteers are welcomed by the Village.

“It’s a well worthwhile project, one I’m very happy to be involved with,” Hornburg said.

The Village Board is also looking forward to two upcoming events. First, this Sunday, the Jamestown Tarp Skunks baseball team will be hosting a game at Diethrick Park to honor the legacy of Howard Ehmke, a Silver Creek native who spent 15 years in Major League Baseball from 1915-1930. Tickets are available at the Village Hall and the Hanover Town Hall and Court.

The Village is also excited to host the 29th annual Laurel Memorial Run on July 18-19 in remembrance of Laurel Hotelling, a beloved member of the Silver Creek community who passed away in 2017 after living an impactful life of 54 years with Down’s Syndrome. The Laurel Memorial Run helps to continue the impact Laurel has on the community, spreading love and joy while raising awareness and visibility for those of all abilities. The event features a 5K run/walk; an 8K run; a 1K Fun Walk; children’s runs; and Laurel’s Lap, designated for anyone with a disability.

The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board is Monday, July 21.

Starting at $3.50/week.
