Hanover seeks funding for hotel, complex

The town of Hanover is seeking grant funding to support a hotel and apartment building to be constructed along Routes 5 and 20.

HANOVER — The town hopes to hear back in two to three months regarding an application for grant funding to develop land on Routes 5 and 20 for a potential hotel, as well as an apartment complex.

The Town Board recently hired David Doerr as a grant writer for the Town’s application to the 2025 New York Building Recreational Infrastructure for Communities, Kids and Seniors (NY BRICKS) grant. The grant application was recently submitted on behalf of the Town.

Earlier this year, the Town received a feasibility study from Spurrier Consulting that stated, “After analyzing the area, we strongly believe that a hotel is not just a luxury, but a necessity for the community.”

Town officials have consistently pushed for a hotel in the region over the past several years, including Supervisor Lou Pelletter, Deputy Supervisor Bernie Feldmann, and Councilman Ed Schintzius.

Spurrier Consulting recommends an 80-room hotel for the area, with seven brands identified as potential suitors — Best Western, Comfort Inn, Country Inn, Sleep Inn, Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn, and Holiday Inn Express. The report stated that Chautauqua County is “a stable and secure location for the proposed hotel” due to what was defined as a good industrial base with numerous recreational venues.

The Town Board is seeking grant funding from the state to support not only a hotel, but also an apartment complex. Hanover is one of several communities that has voiced the need for more housing facilities. The construction of a senior living facility to be built at the site of the former Main Street School in Silver Creek addresses some of those needs for the older population in the Town, but for the remaining demographics, an apartment complex could be a significant and welcomed improvement to the Town.

For his efforts in seeking grant funding for the Town, Doerr will be paid $100 per hour of consulting, up to 50 hours of work. Beyond that, he will receive $75 per hour for any additional work required. Doerr will be paid a flat commission of $5,000 if a minimum total amount of $50,000 is awarded.

Starting at $3.50/week.
