Silver Creek residents reiterate code issues

SILVER CREEK — Resident Anna Frederickson has consistently urged the village and the Town of Hanover to be more strict with code violations over the past year. Frederickson reiterated her concerns at the latest Village Board meeting, and she was not alone.

Frederickson was joined by Jim Castiglia of the Village Planning Board, who had a handful of complaints he previously submitted that were not addressed by Code Enforcement Officers no longer employed by the Village. Daniel Hogg previously resigned as Village Code Enforcement/Zoning Officer, and his successor, John Kennedy, was dismissed by the Village. Village Trustee Sandra Lindstrom told Castiglia that she had the same issue with complaints not being addressed.

The Village currently shares one Code Enforcement Officer with the Town of Hanover, part-time, while one employee is out on medical leave and another is in training.

“This Village has got to get cleaned up. That’s all there is to it,” Frederickson said.

Mayor Jeff Hornburg stated that a derelict building on Central Avenue is set to be demolished by the Chautauqua County Land Bank. The Village Department of Public Works will board up the building in the meantime.

After back-to-back months of more than 50 calls, the Village of Silver Creek Fire Department saw a decrease in activity for the month of August. In total, 43 calls were handled by the department in August, including 24 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls. Over the two previous months, the department handled a total of 109 calls, including 71 EMS calls. There were three motor vehicle accidents in August, compared to five in July and seven in June.

The Village also passed a resolution in support of Congressman Nick Langworthy’s Energy Choice Act and in opposition to government-mandated natural gas bans. The Town of Sheridan passed the same resolution at its latest meeting. In its resolution, the Silver Creek Village Board “urges Congress to pass the Energy Choice Act to defend consumers’ choice, protect energy affordability, and preserve reliable access to natural gas for New York.”

Castiglia voiced his support of the Energy Choice Act and asked the Board, “Could we also vote yes?”

Hornburg stated the Village will attach signatures of any residents who wish to share their support to the resolution as it is submitted and sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board is Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
