Annual Fredonia food drive begins

The annual donation drive for Fredonia Presbyterian Church’s food pantry starts Sunday, Oct. 12.

The drive is now called Fill the Fred Basket, referencing the name of the food pantry. It’s a bit of a rebrand from the former name, Feeding Fredonia Challenge. The goal is still the same: collecting non-perishable items from the community to replenish the pantry.

This year’s drive runs through Oct. 25. “Look for yellow flyers and drop-off bags around town, and watch for local business deals when you donate,” according to a social media post from Fill the Fred Basket volunteers.

Suggested items to donate include beans, canned foods, cereal, coffee, oat, earl, dry milk, peanut butter, rice, soup, pasta, pasta sauce, tomato products, and jelly.

Fill the Fred Basket’s post encourages people to get in touch with volunteers to arrange drop offs of perishable or frozen food items.

The village of Fredonia and towns of Arkwright, Pomfret and Sheridan have all recently issued proclamations declaring “Fill the Fred Basket Days” during the food drive. The pantry is intended for any needy person with an address in the 14603 postal code.

The Fred Basket is open Wednesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., and every third Saturday morning of the month.

Starting at $3.50/week.
