Marsh retiring as Fredonia DPW chief

Scott Marsh

Scott Marsh is retiring as Fredonia’s Department of Public Works Director.

Marsh offered his resignation in an Oct. 8 letter, to be effective Oct. 24.

“It has truly been rewarding to contribute to the growth and success of Fredonia,” Marsh concluded his letter after thanking the village and his government for being allowed to serve. “Thank you again for the opportunity to serve this great community. Fredonia will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Marsh started as Fredonia’s DPW director in June 2021. He replaced Tony Gugino, who also retired.

“I just want to thank the village. It’s been almost 27 years that I’ve been employed here. It’s been a privilege to serve the board and the residents of this village. That’s it,” Marsh said in a brief remark to close his DPW departmental report at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting.

The trustees later ratified his resignation. “If we all said no, would he have to stay?” Trustee Jon Espersen joked.

Mayor Michael Ferguson said, “We want to thank him for all the time getting up in the middle of the night, like many have done. For answering the call — part of the problem (yet) part of the solution with DPW is, you need to be on 24 hours a day, not necessarily presence but (to be) available. When people lose their water, or something happens or a tree falls… everybody wants things done immediately, and Scott has done a great job with his team to make sure those things are done. He’s made our community a better place.”

There was no discussion among village officials Tuesday about Marsh’s replacement. That marked a contrast from Gugino’s retirement in 2021, when trustees in place at the time quickly moved to fill the top DPW position with Marsh.

Starting at $3.50/week.
