Charles J. Hannum

Charles J. Hannum of Dunkirk died peacefully at home on June 12, 2016. He was born in Buffalo, NY on February 16, 1931 to the late Florence (Washington) Hannum and Charles E. Hannum, DDS. Charles was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, Purdue University, and Cornell Law School. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, 25th Infantry Division, from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Hawaii for most of his enlistment. Charles had a distinguished legal career and faithfully served the community for over six decades. He is survived by his wife, Natalie Nichols Hannum, whom he married December 29, 1956 in Clarks Summit, PA. They had

their home built on the shores of Lake Erie where they have resided for 54 years. Charles is also survived by five children and 12 grandchildren. They include son Charles W. (Cynthia) Hannum of Fredonia and grandchildren Charles D. of Boston, MA, Aubrey (Graham) Stoll, and Nicole of Richmond, VA; son John T. (Theresa) Hannum of South Kortright, NY and grandchildren John W. of Westerly, RI and Robert of South Kortright; son James D. (Diane) Hannum and grandchild Seth of Dun-

kirk; daughter Caroline H. (Alan) Shonesky and grandchildren Grant, Callie, and Rylie of Level Green, PA; and son Christopher E. (Kristina) Hannum and grandchildren Madison, Julia, and Christopher J. of Charlotte, NC. Charles was a devoted family man who took great interest and pride in the activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Charles is also survived by his only sibling and loving sister, Virginia H. Snyder of Webster, NY and her family. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Clarence H. Snyder and nephew Steven C. Snyder.His interests included the Washington family immigration to Dunkirk. He was proud of his English heritage, took great delight in his extended family, and spent many hours compiling his family history. Charles was well-versed in military history and enjoyed

visiting historical sites. He was a longtime member of the Dunkirk Rotary Club and the Dunkirk United Methodist Church. The Reverend Carl Richter of Webster, NY officiated a private burial service at Forest Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were his six grandsons. Arrangements were made by McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
