Shirley J. (Leach) Sanderson

WESTFIELD – Shirley J. (Leach) Sanderson, 86, of Crandall Street, Westfield, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, with her loving husband at her side.

Shirley was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Ripley, N.Y., a daughter to the late Wilson H. and Violet R. (Hess) Leach.

She attended and graduated from Mayville Central School in the class of 1955. Following graduation, Shirley went to work for W.T. Grant store in Westfield, N.Y., and fell in love with the love of her life, James Sanderson. They married July 18, 1959, in Westfield, N.Y., and together raised three boys.

Shirley began working at various places in the area once her children were in school. She had been employed by Loblaws, Kingan Pharmacy, B&C Bookkeeping, Renold / Ajax, and was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Sanderson Electric, all located in Westfield.

In earlier years, she enjoyed going camping with her family in the summer months, vacations, cook outs and made fond memories with many. She enjoyed sewing and making clothing and was the go-to person when a family member needed something hemmed or patched. She enjoyed watching birds outside of her window, especially the seasonal hummingbirds.

Retirement years with her husband were memorable. They owned a cottage at Bourne’s Beach in Westfield for 20 years. The cottage was on the shore of Lake Erie and many sunsets were observed and family gatherings were held there annually. She and Jim made many friends there and thought of them as family. Beach glass collecting was one of the many things she liked to do when they weren’t hosting company.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, with Hawaii being their furthest destination. But what she cherished most, was spending time at home with her family and friends. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 62 years, James; their three sons: Tim Sanderson amd Doug (Donna) Sanderson, both of Westfield, and Mark Sanderson of Celoron. Seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Further survived by her sisters: Sandra Leach and Lynnell Ellis, both of Westfield; and her brother, Steve Leach also of Westfield and their canine companion, ‘Muffin’. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Sharon Seiter; and her brother Wilson “Bill” Leach.

As per Shirley’s wishes, all funeral arrangements will be held privately with burial in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are being cared for and provided by the MORSE FUNERAL HOME, 51 Highland Ave., Brocton, NY 14716

Memorial contributions in honor of Shirley may be made to the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, 7540 N Gale St., Westfield, NY 14787
