Elizabeth M. “Liz” Pickup Peters

Elizabeth M. “Liz” Pickup Peters, 93, of Mayville, Passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at Brooks Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 26, 1929, in Cherry Creek, NY the daughter of the late Edward and Grace (Corey) Pickup.

Liz graduated from the former Cherry Creek High School in 1946. She attended Beauty School in Buffalo and opened her own beauty shop in Cherry Creek. On April 23, 1949, she married Harold “Moose” Peters, who passed away on May 15, 2008. They were married in the Cherry Creek Methodist Church by the late Rev. Blaine Dietrick. In 1961 the family moved to Mayville. Liz worked at the Mayville Central School in the cafeteria for several years and then for Agway Petroleum in the office. Later she worked for Family Court in Mayville where she retired in 1991. The Peters family hosted an AFS student from Laos. Later the Laotian Family moved to Mayville.

Liz was a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She also volunteered at Westfield Memorial Hospital for over 34 years. She was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church where she was a former member of the Church Choir, the Bell Choir, and the Queen Esther Circle of the church. Liz enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making quilts and baked goods for her family and friends, and was a huge NASCAR fan.

Liz and Moose were also members of the Coachmen Club 66 and went on many camping trips with the club.

She is survived by her son; Steven (Winnie) Peters of Silver Creek, NY, a daughter; Linda Schroder of North East, PA, three grandchildren; Sean Peters, Stacie (Aaron) Zielinski, and Tyler (Kendra) Schroder, three step-grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Harold “Moose” Peters, a son-in-law; John Schroder, a great-grandson; Noah Schroder and a sister; Betty Seufert.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St). The funeral will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, and also at the funeral home. The Rev. Thomas LeBeau will officiate. Burial will be in the Cherry Creek Cemetery.
