Richard K McKoon

Richard K. McKoon, 78, of Fredonia, died Sunday, June 8, 2025 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born in Buffalo on July 12, 1946, the son of the late Leon and Mary Jane (Stark) McKoon. Richard was a graduate of Forestville Central School, Class of 1964 and graduated from Fredonia State University in 1979 with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 – 1968 and worked for Fredonia State University for 30 years, retiring as a Property Control Clerk.

Richard was a member of the Sheridan VFW Memorial Post #6390, a former member of St. John Bosco RC Church, Sheridan, and St. Rose of Lima RC Church, Forestville. He coached softball in Forestville and for the Fredonia Softball Little League, where at one-time he was President. Richard was a proud supporter of the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. He was a member of the Brown’s Backers and was a season ticket holder from 1999-2012. Richard played baseball for the Liberty Cafe and coached the “Horse’s Fillies” Women’s softball team. He was an over 20-year supporter and foster home for the Lakeshore Humane Society.

Survivors include wife of 55 years, Barbara (Smith) McKoon of Fredonia, whom he married on Aug. 30, 1969 in St. Rose of Lima RC Church, Forestville; two daughters Shannon McKoon, of Dunkirk, Nicole Morano, of Sinclairville; and a sister Elaine Hadley, of Fredonia. Also surviving are three grandchildren Dakota (Lena) Morano, Conner J. Jakubowicz and Gavin M. Jakubowicz; nephew Shawn (Hillary) Hadley; niece Jodi (Sean) McMaster; great-nephews Lakyn Hadley and Shawn Farnham; and great-niece Jordyn (Andrew) Emmott. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a daughter Sherri Lee McKoon, and a brother Wayne McKoon.

Friends are welcome to call at Riles & Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main St., Forestville on Thursday from 4-7 PM from where funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o’clock with Rev. David Watson, pastor of Sheridan United Methjodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Laona Cemetery, where Graveside Military Services will be conducted by members of the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council.
