Philip L. Cornell, 81, of Brocton, formerly of Dunkirk, passed away Thursday morning, July 31, 2025 at Westfield Memorial Hospital. Born in Dunkirk on Dec.10, 1943, he was the husband of Deb (Ransom) Cornell and son of the late Leroy and Dena (Wagner) Cornell.
Philip attended Dunkirk High School and went on to serve as a custodian for 37 years at the Fredonia Central School District until his retirement. Following his retirement, he became a bus driver for Laidlaw for approximately eight years and a further ten years with the Brocton Central School District. His career was marked by a genuine dedication to helping others, reflecting his compassionate spirit and strong work ethic.
Throughout his life, he proudly held the title of a certified EMT, volunteering with both the Stockton Fire Department and the Fredonia Fire Department in the Barker Hose Company, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his community.
In his personal life, Philip was well-known for his wit and jovial spirit. He cherished his weekly trips to Tim Hortons, where he found joy in spending time with friends and sharing many hearty laughs. An animal lover at heart, he found joy in the companionship of his fur babies.
Outside of work and community service, Philip embraced a variety of hobbies and interests. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and was a proud member of the Goldwing Roadriders Association, Chapter U. He also found satisfaction in playing video games, hunting, and engaging in friendly games of Pinochle, activities that brought him great happiness throughout his life.
Memberships include the Fredonia Beaver Club and Pinochle Club.
Philip is survived by his loving wife of 21 years Deb (Ransom) Cornell, whom he married on July 17, 2004; children Kathleen Cornell-Monsur, Tim, Shane, Keith and Kerry Cornell; grandchildren Karrah, Kristin; great-grandchildren Kiarrah and Karsin; brother John (Ellen) Cornell and also survived a niece Katie Cornell and nephews Edward (Lisa) Cornell and Wayne (Cindy) Cornell.
Funeral services will be held in private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, NY.
