Thirty years ago — 1990

Through the efforts of the volunteer firemen in Northern Chautauqua County and the Dunkirk Exempt Fireman’s Club, a new drum and bugle corps has been formed in Dunkirk made up mainly of volunteer firemen throughout the area. Officers are Ron Mleczko, business manager; Cas “Butch” Piglowski, secretary; and Louis Szot, treasurer.

Forty years ago — 1980

The state commissioner of education has finished screening 41 applications for the position of district superintendent for the Chautauqua County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), according to BOCES board president Alfred Shalkowski. Six of the candidates are from Chautauqua County while five are from out of state.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Robert Prechtl of Dunkirk has received a patent for a device to stretch canvas for the artist. It is called “Stretch-A-Canvas.
