Thirty years ago — 1991

Elizabeth A. Ponka, daughter of Andrew and Katherine Ponka of Colburn Street, Westfield has been chosen Student of the Week. A senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Fine Arts Honor Society. Music has been a very significant part of her life. She has studied piano for 11 years and has played the oboe since fifth grade. Elizabeth is a member of the select choral group, Westwinds, and was the June 1991 recipient of the William C. Ross Music Award, She plans on pursuing a career in music.

Forty years ago — 1981

Workers earlier this month began knocking down the former Holy Cross Seminary located on West Lake Road in Dunkirk. With much of the interior salvaged and sold in the past two months, the workers plan to level the remaining building in hopes that the vacant land will attract a buyer for that property. Attempts to sell the large building, which at one time was used to train high school and college students as Catholic Passionist priests, were unsuccessful.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Lou Saban has been named head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

The last service to be held by the First Baptist Chapel, Routes 5 and 20 in Irving takes place this evening. On Jan. 2, 1972, the First Baptist Chapel will hold regular services in its new location, the former First Methodist Church building, Main Street, Silver Creek
