Thirty years ago — 1992
The new traffic signal at the intersection of Millard Fillmore Drive and the Main Street Extension in Dunkirk should be in service any day now. The light was installed as part of a major traffic improvement project funded primarily with federal and state grants. Other new traffic signals already are in operation. Several complaints have been received about the failure of the sensors on Franklin Avenue to detect approaching vehicles and change the light.
Forty years ago — 1982
Six contestants competed for the local title of “Outstanding Teenage Young Person” on Jan. 2. Sponsored by the Fredonia Jaycees and Jayncees, the competition featured five outstanding seniors from Fredonia High School: Mary Rita Heary, Steven Metivier, Jill Renee Privateer, Clare Schuster and Nutan Sharma; and one from Dunkirk High School, Rosetta Haynes. The winner was Jill Renee Privateer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Privateer. She received a plaque and the opportunity to participate in the regional competition.
Fifty years ago — 1972
Benjamin Prescott Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, celebrated its 73rd birthday with a luncheon in the Fredonia United Methodist Church social rooms.
