What’s happening

to our city?

Editor, OBSERVER:

What is going on in the city of Dunkirk? Is there a deliberate effort being made to eliminate the city?

The hospital is being moved out of the confines of the city. Major stores are closed. There is no listing in the telephone director for a U.S. Post Office in the city — but listings for Jamestown, Falconer, Clymer, Chautauqua, Ashville, Lakewood.

We have a lot of vacant buildings, and very little major manufacturing; employment opportunities are scant.

We talk about third world countries — are we becoming a third world city?

Our mayor thinks things are looking good. Rose-colored glasses? Our leaders need to lead! And not down the garden path.

Reed too often

sides with Trump

Editor, OBSERVER:

Congressman Tom Reed represents the president more than he represents the people of the state’s 23rd District. Reed’s Twitter feed during the State of the Union address simply celebrated the President.

There was no mention of climate change. There is practically 100 percent unanimity among climate scientists, world leaders, and the Pentagon that global warming is one of the greatest threats to humanity. Instead, Trump celebrates “beautiful, clean coal.” With no comment from Reed, this makes his membership in the Citizens Climate Lobby a joke.

The president wants to rebuild our nuclear arsenals in order to prepare for a war that must never be waged. He even said, “Perhaps someday in the future, there will be a magical moment when the countries of the world will get together to eliminate their nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, we are not there yet.”

Magic has nothing to do with the reduction of nuclear weapons! If our president and Reed truly want to eliminate nuclear weapons, it will not happen by building more nuclear weapons. There are simply no winners in a nuclear war.

Finally, Trump touts the recently passed tax plan as a victory for working families and Reed agrees. However, every non-partisan evaluation describes it as a gift to the wealthy. Trump and Reed have not convinced those who know the numbers.

We need a representative to the 23rd District and not an accomplice who can only offer praise to the president’s destructive agenda.

GARY A. McCASLIN,

Corning
