Redistricting needs accountability

Editor, OBSERVER:

The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County promotes transparent and accountable redistricting processes, and the ending of hyper-partisan practices that don’t benefit constituents. The League believes that responsibility for fair redistricting should be vested in an independent commission, with membership that reflects constituents’ diversity.

The League supports redistricting processes that promote fair and effective representation, with maximum opportunity for public participation.

Our democracy is powered by the people and is for all of the people. This is why the local League is joined in the national League’s People Powered Fair Maps Program, an effort focused on preparing people to participate in the upcoming redistricting cycle. The People Powered Fair Maps National Day of Action is April 29.

The League urges citizens, legislators, and all elected officials to focus on redistricting:

¯ To advocate, locally, for the creation of a well-qualified bipartisan commission to draw fair and equitable districting lines in Chautauqua County.

¯ At the state level, to consider telling your community’s story at a public hearing convened by the Independent Redistricting Commission later this year.

The League urges all eligible voters to engage in the process, speaking up for their community’s interests. The lines which are drawn will determine the districts we have for the next 10 years.
