Twenty years ago – 1993

Dunkirk’s newest industry, Dunkirk International Glass and Ceramics Corp. plans to conduct a variety of high-tech recycling operations, including the recovery of broken television tube glass. Some of the larger pieces of chemically-coated glass will be returned to the television manufacturing companies for re-use as tubes. DIGCC is in the process of purchasing the former Great Lakes Color Printing Co. plant on Stegelske Avenue and hopes to hire 61 people during the first year of operation.

Soup or steak is the choice to be made by Ronnie Huntington, 12, of Wisteria Drive, Fredonia, who is pictured with a 15-pound puffball he found along Canadaway Creek. Two days after his find, he was still trying to decide how to eat it. “Maybe I’ll carve it and put a candle in it tonight for Halloween,” he said.

Philip Van Vlack received the Bobcat award from Cub Scout Pack 36 of Silver Creek. The pack also received a U.S. flag, which once flew over the Capitol, from a past commander of the state chapter of Disabled American Veterans.

Elmer Langer, William Godfrey and Wayne Hotelling, Silver Creek High School Citizenship Education instructors, asked the school board that the 12th year history course become mandatory, requiring 17 rather than 16 credits for a diploma.

Twenty years ago – 1993

More human bones have been uncovered at the Oak Tree Apartments on Route 438 on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. Indian beads were found mixed with the human remains, suggesting an ancient burial ground so old the elders of the community were unaware of its existence. The bones were estimated to be 400 to 500 years old and according to Seneca tradition, “the dead are taken care of and respected so that no spirit will be in conflict with whoever is involved. They (the spirits/bones) are put at rest.” It was learned that a fourth skeleton had been unearthed following the first discovery of human bones two days ago.

Kris Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hall of Harmon Avenue, Brocton has been named Student of the Week at Brocton Central School. A senior, Kris ranks in the top of her class academically and has participated in many extracurricular activities including choir, Drama Club, National Honor Society, cheerleading and student council. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.

UFO reports have arrived. Dozens of reports – including those from three police officers, two from Dunkirk and one from Silver Creek – of seeing strange, unexplainable objects in the sky, kept area law officers busy last night.

Members of the Fredonia Fire Department and village of Fredonia and town of Pomfret employees, joined forces today to combat a stubborn brush and woods fire near the Fredonia Reservoir which has apparently been smoldering for a week.

Up to 17 jobs could be lost in the city of Dunkirk under a plan by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. to consolidate its eight regional telephone customer service centers into one large facility somewhere in the state. NiMo spokesman Stephen Brady said that a decision on the facility is not expected until next month. And, while Dunkirk is in the running as a possible site, there is no indication that the city is likely to be chosen. At present, the Dunkirk NiMo office on East Fourth Street employs 27 people, with plans to retain 10 customer service positions locally and keeping the office itself open.

Louise Sorge of Silver Creek was one of several Western New York women who met recently with Matilda Cuomo, wife of Gov. Mario Cuomo, and toured the Governor’s Office and the Empire State Plaza in Albany. Following lunch in the Executive Mansion, Mrs. Cuomo accompanied the group on a tour of the home. Built in 1857, it has been the home of state governors since 1875.

Mark Zanghi of Portland and Greg Gerrity , sophomores at Fredonia State University College, were elected to the Student Association’s representative assembly at the college.

The Milano Construction Company is handling the million-dollar storm sewer project in Dunkirk on Washington Avenue and its connecting laterals.

The Fredonia Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of its four annual awards, which are set to be presented during the Nov. 1 banquet at the White Inn. They are: George Civiletto, Retail Person of the Year; Robert A. Maytum, Business Person of the Year; Robert W. Liener Jr., Community Service Person of the Year; and Walter J. Doyle, who will be honored for his Service to Humanity.

Boxcar buffs are in for a real treat once the Dunkirk Historical Society completes renovations on one which was donated by the AL Tech Steel Corp. and which is now being stored at the Roblin Steel Co. plant. The 38-foot long car was built in 1907 by the Albany Car Shop for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad Co. Society members hope to begin restoration in the spring and to someday acquire a New York Central caboose and a locomotive built by the former Brooks Locomotive Works of Dunkirk.

During the semi-annual meeting at the Fredonia Fire Department, the Chautauqua County Volunteer Firemen’s Association named Charles Drummond of Fredonia chairman of the 1974 Chautauqua County Gala Days in Stockton.

Led by junior Paul Kewley and defensive stars Phil Hussion, Dan Polowy and Dan Barthold, the Cardinal Mindszenty High School football team defeated Notre Dame and is now first in the Catholic Football League’s Bishop Smith division.

The powerlifting team from Darwin’s Health Club won another title at the Greater Buffalo Bench Press competition recently at Maryvale High School. Dave Kyser, Mike O’Hara and Keith Naslund led Darwin’s with first place finishes in their respective weight classes. A state champion, Kyser benched 325 in the master’s category. He set the state record of 340 in last year’s competition. Naslund lifted 440 in the 242-lb. class while O’Hara benched 285 in the teenage 148-lb. weight class.

The village of Forestville is marking its 175th anniversary with an Apple Festival. The year was 1808 when Jehiel Moore found his way through the thick brush and made a trail from what was known as the Lake Erie Road to the wooded and untouched area which would become the village of Forestville. Mr. Moore built a cabin and a sawmill. He most likely founded what most motorists know as Route 428 from Silver Creek to Forestville.

The Buffalo Bills, one of the true surprises of the 1973 season, will play the Miami Dolphins in Miami this Sunday to determine which team will take first in the American Conference East.

Forestville High School’s Junior Carnival was held in the school gymnasium. Singing “I’m a Big Girl Now,” the “Girls” singing group consisted of Jim Pleszewski, Glen Gens, Bruce Smith and Kenny Hall.

Student of the Week is Rachael Schrader, a senior at Brocton Central School. The daughter of Howard and Kathy Schrader of Portland and George and Patricia Cook of Westfield, she is active in a variety of school organizations, holding offices in Honor Society and Key Club, editor of the yearbook and feature editor of the school newspaper. As an athlete, Rachael is a four-year participant in volleyball and basketball. After a visit to Germany immediately following graduation, she plans to enroll in college.

A two-mile stretch of the Cattaraugus Creek in Gowanda was the site of the second annual Gowanda Fishing Derby, held over the weekend, with 351 contestants participating. The creek was stocked with 206 tagged trout purchased from a private hatchery. Forty-six trout were caught and returned for prizes. Biagio Gall of Gowanda caught the trout tagged by Gabel Bros. Inc. to win a portable television set. Another trout that was tagged as the “Jewel of the Cattaraugus” was caught. But the prize of a $500 diamond ring went unclaimed because the catch was snagged, which is illegal. Only salmon are allowed to be snagged.

Carol E. Kommer, a 1972 graduate of Dunkirk High School, is home after completion of a U.S. Navy training program in Orlando, Fla. Miss Kommer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kommer, 605 Roosevelt Ave., Dunkirk.

The Sheridan Town Board has decided not to change the name of New Road after receiving a request from the Sheridan Fire Department to do so. The request stems from past confusion with Newell Road, also in Sheridan, in dealing with emergency calls. Prior to the board’s decision, a petition was presented from 14 full-time residents of New Road who felt that changing the name of the road was unnecessary.

Samuel Baglia, manager of McDonald’s of Fredonia, was honored with McDonald’s Manager of the Year Award recently. The award recognizes McDonald’s managers who have achieved outstanding standards of quality service and cleanliness in their stores. Mr. Baglia graduated from McDonald’s Hamburger University in September 1978. He was named manager of McDonald’s of Fredonia in June 1980. He and his wife Cindy reside in Stockton.

John J. Buczek III’s cat “Skipper” and her four 7-week-old kittens are “Pets of the Week.” John is the 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Buczek Jr., Route 60, Fredonia.

A two-day celebration was recently held by the Silver Creek Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1307 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the lodge.

Rainy’s Family Hair Care salon recently opened at 20 Orchard St. in Fredonia, replacing the former Executive Hair Salon. Rainy’s actually opened its doors in early September in an effort to provide continuity for previous Executive customers but additional improvements were made and Grand Opening specials continue, according to new owner Lorraine Derby. Rita Augello, former owner of the Executive and Joy Hite, also previously with the Executive, have joined Mrs. Derby in the new business venture.

Buffalo Mayor Jimmy Griffin recently attended a fund-raising event for Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski and spoke out on his behalf. “Ed has done a great job as mayor of Dunkirk,” Griffin said, adding that he has the same problems in Buffalo that the mayor has in Dunkirk: the development of the harborfront and the alleviation of massive unemployment.

Paul K. Cooley, Cassadaga Valley Central School newspaper adviser, was one of 34 teachers and publications advisers to be named runner-up in the national “Journalism Teacher of the Year” awards.

According to information released recently by the State University of New York (SUNY), Jamestown Community College ranked among the top five SUNY community colleges for a five-year period in the number of students who transferred to SUNY four-year institutions. In fall 1991, the number of JCC transfers to the SUNY College of Fredonia ranked first among all SUNY community college transfers in that year.

Wayne Saxton of Cassadaga has been named “Rookie of the Year” at the annual New York Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative supervisor seminar in Syracuse. Mr. Saxton was cited for service to members, professionalism, sales accomplishments and overall contribution to the cooperative. Mr. Saxton visits 45 dairy herds monthly, collecting milk samples and maintaining management records for 2,700 cows in Chautauqua County.

The wooden sculpture of the American Indian at the water treatment plant grounds in Dunkirk is being dedicated today. According to Mayor Clem Lutz, this is American Indian Day in Dunkirk.

S. Gordon Corter of 5 Lowell Place, Fredonia, was announced as the winner of the free trip in the Dunkirk-Fredonia Plaza Association’s “prize give-away,” in honor of the plaza’s fourth anniversary.

Jennifer Sue Ballard, a 1993 graduate of Pine Valley Central School and a freshman psychology major at SUNY Fredonia, has been selected to perform with the College Choir under the direction of Dr. David Evans. She is the daughter of Sue and Dave Ivett of Forestville. “Jenni is the only freshman woman chosen for the choir and we’re very proud,” her mother said.

Mark Swetz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Swetz of Collins, has been named Student of the Week at Gowanda Central School. Mark is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as president of his senior class. He is also a member of the varsity football team and the Senior High Band. Following graduation, Mark hopes to attend the University of Rochester to study pre-medicine.

President Nixon announced that he has chosen Rep. Gerald R. Ford, 60, to be the nation’s 40th vice president. Easy confirmation appears assured in both the House and Senate.

Chautauqua County’s solid waste managers had some good news for local municipalities, businesses, individuals and trash haulers. It was announced that increases in landfill tipping fees scheduled for this month will be postponed until January and when they do go into effect, will be markedly less than previously anticipated. The announcement could mean thousands of dollars in savings for private industry.

Plans for the construction of a $30,000 lighted softball field in Dunkirk’s Wright Park are in limbo for now, according to the city’s Recreation Department. Apparently, the stadium can not be built until officials of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Midget Football League agree to move their playing field from near the proposed site. But officials of the youth football league, including Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski who serves as league president, decided to continue to use Samuel Moreeno Field in Wright Park this fall rather than move.

Dr. Rocco R. Doino, general chairman for the “Salute to SUNY” community testimonial dinner at the Holiday Inn, announced that about 325 persons have made reservations.

Pet of the Week is “Babe,” a fox which Timothy Szumigala, 14, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szumigala of Sheridan Center Road, Fredonia raised since it was 2 weeks old and released this summer. Babe visits the family mornings and evenings for food, a romp with the family dog and sometimes follows Tim through the woods. She also chases the cows, horses and other animals on the farm.

MacKenzie Malcolm, formerly of Fredonia and now living in Moscow, was interviewed by Channel 2 anchorman Rick Kellman about the recent turmoil in Russia. Ms. Malcolm, who has been working several months for a restaurant and hotel in Moscow, has an apartment across the street from the Russian Parliament. She stated that she believes Russian President Boris Yeltsin has the support of everyone in that country and she now feels safe. MacKenzie is the daughter of John and Linda Malcolm of Fredonia.

A farewell reception for the Rev. Timothy Kelley, associate pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church was held Oct. 9 in the school hall. Father Kelley, who has been stationed at the Dunkirk parish for five years, will leave before the end of the month for his new assignment in Tampa, Fla.

Doris Stupcy, Mary Janik and Stella Cieslewicz, all of Dunkirk, have returned from a four-week tour of Poland. The women visited relatives there.

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Thruway Plaza is celebrated its fourth anniversary with a 10-day sale. The Plaza Association, in appreciation of their customers, also awarded prizes including one trip, all expenses paid.

The Gowanda Business and Professional Women’s Club has named Joan R. Byrne as its 1993 “Woman of the Year.” She was chosen for her volunteer spirit demonstrated most recently by her efforts to start the 50-Plus Senior Program and the inception of the Meals on Wheels Program. She also was the first and only female town justice for the Town of Collins, serving from 1971 to 1985. Ms. Byrne said her philosophy has always been, “If I see a need, I try to fill it.”

Ripley carpenter Chip Garrett, 26, made front-page headlines throughout his 49-day cross-country walk to raise money for crib death research. He raised $50,000 in New York prior to his walk and said that virtually every town he went through gave him coverage. Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley greeted Garrett following his 2,647-mile trek from New York, signed his log book and telephoned Guinness Book of World Records officials to verify the record. Garrett decided to raise money for research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome following the death of his son, Justin Lee. He wore out 10 pairs of shoes, 250 pairs of socks and lost 31 pounds during the walk.

The newly-formed “Gadabouts” met at the home of Mrs. Frederick Hudson Jr. on South Roberts Road. Bonnie Roman will host the next meeting at her home on New Road, Dunkirk.

Hector Bauza, a junior at Dunkirk Industrial High School, was selected as outstanding teenager of the week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cruz Bauza of 6 West Talcott St., Dunkirk.

One of America’s most unusual college presidents will give the annual address for the Academic Convocation at SUNY Fredonia. Dr. Leon Botstein, the lively and intellectual president of Bard College, will present the lecture, “Education in the Year 2000.” At age 23, Dr. Botstein became the whiz kid of college presidents when he took the helm at Franconia College in New Hampshire. Four years later, he was hired as president of Bard College, where he has been for the past 19 years.

Dunkirk Police Officer John Roesler was recently presented with a citation by Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski recognizing his role in saving the life of a 4-year-old Pennsylvania girl over the Labor Day weekend. Roesler was camping at a campground near Westfield when the girl was found unconscious, lying face down in a wading pool. He and an off-duty firefighter gave the child mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the local emergency squad arrived to rush her to the hospital where she was revived and later released.

The freshman social studies class at Fredonia High School is learning local geography from the air this year. Among the participating airborne students are Sharon Chambers, Peggy Meadows and Debbie Jamieson.

C. Edward Kaufman, teacher at Silver Creek High School, gave an account of his study tour this summer through Greece and Italy during the organizational meeting of the Silver Creek Shakespeare Club.

The Power Shop, located at 202 East Main St., Fredonia (in the former Pomfret C&E Agway location) recently held its grand opening celebration with a special “sawdust day.” Owner/operator Jon Longenecker welcomed Jonsered factory regional representative Larry Knapp to the event. Pressure washer, chain saw and log splitter demos were held, plus the store offered specials on chainsaw chains and accessories.

The West Drug Store at 339 Central Ave., Dunkirk was recently purchased by the Adams Drug Company. West Drug has been serving residents of Dunkirk since 1889. Since that time, the store has gone through several owners. Tom Lynch, the supervising pharmacist, has owned the store for 22 years. The name of the store under new ownership will be Brooks Drugs, which will continue to operate a store at the D&F Plaza.

Philip S. Pelletter received the gavel from Daniel A. Putnam, outgoing president of the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce, during installation ceremonies at the Dunkirk Club.

Fifty years ago – 1963

The Francisco Juame family, now living at 70 East Fourth St., Dunkirk are the city’s newest residents. They are refugees from Castro’s Communist regime in Cuba. Mr. Juame is an office equipment repairman at McClenathan Printery Inc.

The Dunkirk Radiator Corp?was honored recently at The Resource Center’s Disability Awareness Awards, receiving the award for being Allied Industries’ Customer of the Year. John Reed, Dunkirk Radiator’s vice president in charge of operations, accepted the award on behalf of the company. Dunkirk Radiator’s affiliation with The Resource Center goes back more than 20 years. The company historically has been the second largest customer of Allied Industries’ Dunkirk Division.

The Cliffstar Corp. of Dunkirk has reached an agreement to purchase the former Plymouth Tube Co. plant located in Dunkirk’s Progress Park. The sale is expected to close Nov. 1. Part of the large building will initially be used for non-food warehouse space, but long range plans call for the installation of new production lines in the front part of the building, company offices and leasing of space to other companies for storage purposes.

Katie Waterman of Forestville was crowned Homecoming Queen this year. Her court includes Debbie Holland, Janet Dix, Sue Youngberg, Elyse Winterberger and Jill Ernst.

Claude Brooks of Brocton reported he saw a “Wonder of Nature” when he spied Jesse Craig, son of Mrs. Ethel Craig, feeding bread to a deer near the corner of Munson and Webster roads. Stopping his car, Mr. Brooks went over to the pair and found the deer to be very tame.

Another round of employee reductions has beset the Dunkirk industrial community. AL Tech Specialty Steel Corp. announced today they have made “a sizable reduction in the company’s salaried workforce.” Citing a continuing decline in sales because of the foreign import market, the company said the terminations were needed to maintain a proper fiscal balance. The company would not release the exact number of permanent layoffs, or a percentage figure.

The wedding dress worn by Georgina Salmond for her marriage to Kirby Hayward on Jan. 11, 1883 will be featured at the fashion exhibit at the Dunkirk Historical Museum. Their wedding took place in the Dunkirk home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Salmond on what is now Lake Shore Drive. The dress was given to the society by their daughter, Miss Emily G. Hayward of Lincoln Arms Apartments, Dunkirk.

David M. Civilette, 25, of 122 Lincoln Ave., Dunkirk announced today the opening of his law office at 427 Central Ave., Dunkirk. He is a member of the American and State Bar associations and graduated from Dunkirk High School and the University of Buffalo School of Law.

A low-rent housing unit in Dunkirk for senior citizens has been pledged by Republican mayoral candidate Dale Forness. The proposal was announced by Donald Sharman, GOP candidate for Second Ward councilman.

Dunkirk resident Louis Ziegler was recently sworn into office as second vice president of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association during an installation service in Wheatfield. Chester Tarnowski, president of Dunkirk’s Murray Hose Company 4, presented a gift to the outgoing association president, Robert Walker. Murray Hose 4 will host the association’s 1996 convention, which will be held in Dunkirk.

Bruce P. Patrono of 201 Newton St., Fredonia, general partner in Lakeside Equities, announced today that the partnership has purchased the former Hilltop Diner at 268 West Main St., Fredonia. The business is being converted into a mini-mart and gasoline station which will sell gas at competitive prices. The store and gasoline station will be known as One Stop. Mr. Patrono said they hope to have the business up and running by mid-November.

Dr. Raymond Szukala, a Dunkirk dentist, heads the city’s Professional Division of the United Way Fund Drive which continues the remainder of the month. He and his wife Alice reside with their children at 25 Tenney St., Dunkirk.

Student of the Week is Emily West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles West of King Road, Forestville. A senior at Forestville High School, she is an active member of the school band. Emily is also an athlete who has participated in varsity basketball, cross country and track. Class treasurer, she is a member of the Honor Society and is a three time selection for “Who’s Who among American High School Students.” Emily plans to pursue a career as an elementary or music teacher.

Four Star Pizza in the Ames Plaza on Route 60 in the town of Dunkirk, opened for business on Sept. 18 and recently celebrated its grand opening. The pizza-only parlor features free home delivery in 30 minutes or less in the Dunkirk-Fredonia area. Kelly Cottrill, co-owner of the new business, noted that the local store is the 10th Four Star Pizza parlor to open. Four Star also has one other store in New York State with the rest in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Pumpkins of all shapes and monstrous sizes are rolling onto Ray Waterman’s farm today for the 11th annual World Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Collins, the goal of which is to produce vegetables that might feel at home in an H.G. Wells novel. The current record holder is an 827-pound pumpkin grown in Washington. About 100 growers will try to break that record today. The goal of the event is to grow a 1,000-pound pumpkin by the end of the decade.

It was a scene from the olden days at the Elwin “Bub” Cross farm on Alleghany Road in Forestville. Members of the Collins Draft Horse Club participated in a “corn cutting and silo filling” day at the farm. Teams of horses and old-fashioned equipment brought back memories of “the way it used to be” at the farm. Many of those watching were amazed at the work a good team of horses and a driver can do.

Veterans of World War I, Dunkirk Barracks and Auxiliary 1999, surprised Commander and Mrs. Stephen Kalfas at a luncheon meeting by presenting them with a large cake in honor of their 49th wedding anniversary.

The Misses Henrietta Jelonek, Alma Brooks, Mary Damiano and Evelyn Smith, members of the Brooks Hospital nursing staff, are attending the New York-New Jersey Catholic Nurses Regional Conference in Buffalo.

Twenty years ago – 1993

On Oct. 1, David C. Mancuso took over as the new president of the Dunkirk-based Lake Shore Savings and Loan Association. He replaces Donald L. Lindquist, who is retiring after serving 17 1/2 years as the top executive officer at the county’s only locally owned and managed financial institution. Lake Shore Savings has been in operation in Dunkirk since 1891.

Thirty years ago – 1983

“Gail’s” celebrated its grand opening in Silver Creek Sept. 26 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The dress shop is located on Central Avenue in Silver Creek in the former Smith’s Dress Shop. The location has been a women’s wear dress shop for more than 50 years. The new shop features a silver and burgundy color scheme. Gail Brennan is the owner of the new establishment and her key salesperson is her mother, Ruth Sheeler of Silver Creek.

Forty years ago – 1973

Old photos of Dunkirk will be displayed this week at the Dunkirk Free Library by the city’s Historical Society. The photos, dating past the turn of the century, were taken by the late Dr. George E. Blackham, a prominent Dunkirk physician. Gertrude Shepard, 25 Gardner St., Fredonia first found the photos at her home, hidden in the back of an old picture frame.

Applications for employment at the new Town ‘n Country department store, former site of the Safe Store, on Central Avenue in Dunkirk, are being taken this week.

Twenty years ago – 1993

The Northern Chautauqua Chamber of Commerce has selected Nog Inc., President Bruce H. Ritenberg III as its 1993 Person of the Year. He will receive his award during the 12th annual chamber award. Mr. Ritenberg was the unanimous choice of the chamber’s regional executive board. Nog is a family-owned and operated business located in Dunkirk which manufactures variegating bases, sauces, flavors, syrups and ice cream bar novelty coatings, selling primarily to the dairy industry.

Thirty years ago – 1983

David Hornburg, the “Tire Man” of Sinclairville, plans to convert scrap tires into oil that he says can be refined into diesel fuel. There are an estimated three million tires piled on his Route 60 property south of Cassadaga. Mr. Hornburg has been accumulating the tires for six years and fully expects to go ahead with his plans to convert the tires into oil, beginning next spring. He has been cited by the state for operating an illegal landfill and is scheduled to face the charge in Charlotte Town Court this week.

Benjamin Colaiacovo will represent Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922 and Robert M. Kinney will represent Fredonia American Legion Post 59 in the “Mr. America” contest portion of the High Fever Follies this year.

Fifty years ago – 1963

The newly-organized 4-H saddle club, the Forest Creek Trail Blazers, met recently at the home of Mrs. Jean Bowker in Forestville. Nancy Adams was elected president.
