Twenty years ago – 1994

Forestville Central School was awarded a letter of commendation and achievement plaque for being the first school in Chautauqua County to declare itself “tobacco free.” A letter to Superintendent J. Richard Rodriguez from the Chautauqua County Tobacco Control Coalition stated, “Congratulations on a job well done. Thanks to your quick lead, other schools in the county seem to be following suit.” Forestville’s policy actually begins Sept. 1. The law requires schools to adopt the policy by Sept. 26.

Thirty years ago – 1984

County Legislator Chester Tarnowski announced today that plans have been prepared and work has begun on the realignment of a portion of Roberts Road in the town of Dunkirk. He said the project would correct a dangerous situation that has existed on South Roberts Road for many years. Over the years, this dangerous curve has resulted in deaths and thousands of dollars in property damage. The sharp curve is being eliminated.

The YMCA Day Camp at the Dunkirk Conference Grounds on Route 5 has 292 children enrolled and also has a waiting list.

Mrs. Norman Ihrig of Fredonia, a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club, won the premium championship this year in the flower department at the Chautauqua County Fair.

Twenty years ago – 1994

After 16 years of selling and repairing bicycles, Bill’s Bikes and Sports will be giving up the bike end of the business and moving from 323 Central Ave., Dunkirk. The dwindling traffic of bike shoppers and repair orders coupled with the competition of area mass merchants, has forced owners Bill and Jane Ploetz to consolidate the business and refocus its attention to supplying commercial sporting goods. A grand opening is being scheduled for the new Lifestyle Sport Shop at 355 Central Ave., Fredonia.

Thirty years ago – 1984

The Dunkirk Public Schools energy conservation project is under way with the replacement of windows at School 4 on Central Avenue. Old glass block windows are being replaced with new thermopane windows that have insulated panels on top. Windows will also be replaced this summer at Schools 3 and 5 and at the Middle School.

Forty years ago – 1974

One of the largest manhunts in local history took place, as 180 uniformed policemen combed a two-square-mile area near Vineyard Drive in Dunkirk for a 21-year-old Manchester, N.H., man. The subject reportedly disarmed and then locked Fredonia-based State Trooper Kenneth Olkowski in the trunk of his patrol car, at gunpoint. The trooper had stopped to question the subject who was hitchhiking near the Dunkirk-Fredonia interchange of the State Thruway. No one was injured in the incident and the subject was later taken into custody.

Lukas P. Forbes, son of Dr. and Mrs. John R. Forbes of Dunkirk, recently graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Lukas was a distinguished graduate, a dean’s list student, and a recipient of the Superintendent’s Wreath for Academic, Physical and Military Excellence. His academic area of concentration was psychology with a systems engineering track. Lukas is now commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Gov. Mario Cuomo, who was in a six-car pileup this weekend, signed an unprecedented law requiring New York motorists to use seatbelts or face a $50 fine. The law will take effect Jan. 1, making New York the first state in the nation to require seatbelts to be used. Besides requiring drivers and front seat passengers to wear safety belts, the law requires children under 10 years old to be buckled in or be in safety seats in the back seat. Violators will be fined $50.

The Chautauqua Opera Association is planning a presentation of “West Side Story” at Norton Memorial Hall.

A five-piece musical group, “Good Times,” is playing at The Caboose in Fredonia.

Gus, a white Peking duck and Laddie, an English setter, are “Pets of the Week.” They belong to Roberta Mangano, 13, and Jill Mangano, 18, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mangano, 24 Monroe St., Silver Creek.

Jeff Delcamp, formerly of Silver Creek, has retired after a 20-year career in the United States Navy. He served from Vietnam to Desert Storm, as well as a three-year Navy recruiting tour in Florida. Mr. Delcamp is now residing in Forestville with his wife, Christina (Kaminski) of Forestville and their two sons, Brandon, 13, and Timothy, 8.

New owners of the historic Revere Inn Restaurant in downtown Silver Creek are serving their customers with nearly 50 years combined experience behind them. Patricia Garcia and Dave Murphy are co-owners of the business. Their families are helping behind the scenes. Even Mrs. Garcia’s mom has a helping hand in the business – that flaky and tasty pie crust is her specialty. The Revere would like to specialize in private parties and banquets, with facilities available for small groups or as many as 125 persons.

Busti-Lakewood Police Lt. John R. Bentley II, eldest son of the late Chautauqua County Sheriff, has accepted the Republican nomination for the job his late father held for more than 20 years. Although he had initially declined to be a candidate soon after his father’s death, the abrupt withdrawal of Republican candidate Lt. John Runkle from the race changed the whole situation.

The lucky grand prize winners at the grand opening of the new Tops Friendly Market on Vineyard Drive in Dunkirk were Mr. and Mrs. Warren Beyer and family who were congratulated by Tops Manager Mark Glowski. They won the mini car from Old Milwaukee Beer. Among the other winners were Lori Carlson, Peter Moldenhauer, Darlene Fedyszyn, the Franklin Family, Santa DiPasquale, Gerie Leone, Thelma Hilliker, Helen Benson, Robin Zentz and Sylvia Dahn.

Donald Cato of Fredonia is the new premium champion of the horticulture department at the Chautauqua County Fair in Dunkirk.

The Cardinal Mindszenty Alumni Association held an organizational meeting recently at the home of Peter and Pauline Zaccari. The agenda of the meeting consisted of discussion about reopening a Catholic high school in Chautauqua County. Letters will be sent to all interested alumni and a fundraising campaign will begin. Information booths will be set up at the Northern Chautauqua Catholic School Summerfest and Alumni T-shirts will be sold. An open meeting will take place Sept. 2 at the Newman Center at which time committee chairmen will be chosen.

Edgewater Condominiums has completed 52 of the 166 planned units which are located on Lake Erie near Westfield. Prices start at $36,900 and include carpeting, patios, balconies and appliances. Pools, lounges and tennis courts are also offered at Edgewater.

Dunkirk’s off-track betting parlor will be located at 81 East Fifth St., the Western Region Off-Track Betting Corporation of Batavia announced. The starting salary for a manager of an off-track betting parlor was estimated to be $11,000 per year.

Amanda Drummond, the 8-year-old daughter of Mark and Brenda Drummond of Dunkirk, won the best hula-hoop dancer competition for ages 8 and younger to kick off the Fredonia Fabulous ’50s Week in Barker Common.

Jerry and Laverne Meyers, owners of McDonald’s of Fredonia, recently visited the McDonald’s Olympic Swim Stadium in Los Angeles, site of all swimming, diving and synchronized swimming events for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Their store is one of over 1,700 McDonald’s worldwide that funded the pool’s construction.

The Dave Yuen Show, featuring “Lilly Lane,” is appearing at the Top of the Mark at Mark’s Restaurant on Lake Shore Drive, Dunkirk.

Dunkirk Police hurried to the Tenney Street ball diamond when someone reported several boys under age had a keg of beer. Acting Lt. Frank Shepard and Patrolman Edward Zentz, who investigated, said the boys had beer, but everything was OK – because it was root beer.

Two Brocton Central School students have qualified as National Cheerleader Association All-American Cheerleaders. Jessica Pendl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Pendl of Fredonia and Darren Manzella, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Manzella of Portland, were chosen as 1994 representatives from this area. Both are members of the Brocton Varsity Basketball Cheering Squad. They are eligible to perform during the half-time show of the Jeep-Eagle Aloha Bowl game in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Dunkirk Zoning Board unanimously rejected a request for a special use permit that would have allowed the owners of the Minute Man gas station at the corner of Lucas and Central avenues to convert the building to a Mini Mart Convenient Store.

Roy DeGolier, commandant of the Lake Shore Detachment Marine Corps League, was named “Marine of the Year” and “Commandant of the Year” at the annual state convention military ball on Staten Island.

Leland Parker announced the appointment of Samuel Powell as managing director of Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel Inc., in Forestville.

Several months ago, a countywide task force was formed by former county legislator Al Jones and includes businessmen, county legislators and other interested county residents. It has become the mission of this committee to enlist broad-based support for the improvement of Route 60 and to develop a long-range vision of what the Route 60 surface and rights-of-way should become by the year 2000. Route 60 is recognized as a vital means of moving manufactured goods and materials across the county from the Niagara Frontier to the Atlantic States region.

Walter Mondale has chosen Rep. Geraldine Ferraro to be his running mate. If the Democratic National Convention meeting in San Francisco nominates Mondale and Ferraro as expected, it will be the first time in American history that a woman has been on the ticket of a major political party.

A New York City architect met with members of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Players to consult with them on the renovation and reconstruction of the Depot Playhouse on East Main Street in Fredonia.

Philip Del Popolo and his wife Mary are shown in a photo with President Bill Clinton. Phil is the golf director at Carroll Valley Country Club near Fredricksburg, Md. The president golfed recently with Phil while staying at Camp David. Phil is the son of Dr. Joseph A. Del Popolo, a former Dunkirk resident now living in Rochester, and Sara Lindquist Del Popolo of Cortland. His grandmother, Pauline Greco, resides in Dunkirk with Chester and Rosemary Gliwa, his aunt and uncle.

Capt. Oliver L. Price, U.S. Navy, Chief Trial Judge of the Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, was awarded the Legion of Merit medal by the Secretary of the Navy at his recent retirement ceremony. Capt. Price, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leon L. Price of Genet Street, Dunkirk, was born and raised in Dunkirk and graduated from Dunkirk High School with the Class of 1947. At the time of his retirement, Capt. Price supervised 13 circuits of 70 Navy and Marine judges worldwide.

More than 200 children got a preview of the Stockton Gala Days when the Chautauqua County Firemen’s Fraternity and the midway operator, Fun City Amusements, provided free rides for a group of underprivileged youngsters.

The Northern Chautauqua Catholic School Board of Education announced that Michael E. Goth of Silver Creek has been named principal. Mr. Goth recently retired as principal of Silver Creek Elementary School after 15 years of service. Prior to coming to Silver Creek in February 1977, he served as principal of the Cattaraugus Elementary School for 10 years. In addition, he has served as a supervisor of student teachers at Fredonia State University College.

The U.S. Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights, was one of the featured attractions at the recent Western New York International Air Show at the Niagara Falls Airport. Handling the behind-the-scenes arrangements and scheduling for the team was Capt. Michelle Hughes Koehler, a former Fredonian. She is the operations officer for the world-famous parachuting team which is celebrating its silver anniversary this year. Michelle is the daughter of Shirley Snyder Hughes and Virgil W. “Bill” Hughes, both of Fredonia. She is an alumna of Fredonia High School.

Junior girls from the Sunday school class of the Baptist Church in Forestville were accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Helen Mezzio, and also Mrs. Dorothy Grisanti to Kleinhan’s Music Hall in Buffalo for a performance by a gospel quartet.

Two Westfield brothers, Andrew and Michael Cash, followed a career choice made as teenagers and, with a year of each other, graduated from medical school. Both brothers graduated from Kirksville College of Ostepathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo. Dr. Andrew Cash has completed a one-year internship in internal medicine at Warren General Hospital in Warren, Ohio. Dr. Michael Cash is in the process of completing a one-year internship, also at Warren General, in the field of family medicine. Andrew and Michael are the sons of Anthony and Connie Cash of Westfield.

Mrs. Gilda Hutchinson of Dunkirk has been appointed to the College Council of Fredonia State University College for a term expiring June 30, 1991. Mrs. Hutchinson is a former assistant professor of English at the Fredonia college, first appointed in 1947. In 1955, she left to raise her children, returning part-time in 1962 and 1970. She was a member of the Dunkirk School Board from 1971 to 1978 and is active in local and national politics, serving as a member and former officer of the Democratic Women’s Club.

A plaque was dedicated earlier this month for Dunkirk’s wooden sculpture, “Ong-gwe-ohn-weh,” near the Dunkirk Filtration Plant. The sculpture was made by artist Peter Toth as a tribute to the plight of the American Indian.

Chautauqua Institution has launched a 100th anniversary development program to raise $2.8 million for the improvement and expansion of its physical assets and its annual program.

The Resource Center on Lake Shore Drive West in Dunkirk is in the midst of an expansion that will better meet current and future needs of individuals with disabilities living in northern Chautauqua County and their families. The two major facets of the project are the creation of an outpatient extension clinic for the Center’s diagnostic and treatment center and the construction of a building to house a day treatment/day habilitation program. About 80 new people will be working at The Resource Center’s Dunkirk site once the construction is finished.

A $50 prize went to the Unique Rockers, first place winners in the Break Dance Contest held for the benefit of the CASH Home Repair Program of the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry Inc. Winning dancers were Cory Marshall, who also won $20 as top individual dancer; Jimmy DeJesus, Fonzo Robinson, Jimmy Waller and Ricky Ruiz. The D.C. Rockers (Rafael Santiago, Edwin Pagan, Feliciano Salgado and Andre Vasquez) took the $25 for second place group and Edwin Pagan was awarded $10 as second place individual dancer. The event was held at the VFW clubrooms on Deer Street.

Chautauqua County Legislature Chairman Joseph Gerace asked if any employees or the legislature would like to donate money to repair the Santa Claus suit being used by the county infirmary in Dunkirk. Apparently, the costume was in arrears. It was damaged and would show the underwear of the wearer.

A new women’s cologne, “Cool Spell,” is currently being sold for $2 at Sidey’s in the D&F Plaza.

Fredonia State University graduate and Dunkirk native Wendy Corsi Staub will be returning to the Western New York area for a book signing of “Getting it Together,” her second novel. The book focuses on the character of CJ, an imperfect kid with a perfect family, trying to make it in television production. Ms. Corsi Staub is currently on a publicity tour in the Midwest to promote the book. On Aug. 6, she will appear at the Book Nook in Dunkirk for an autograph session. Her first novel, “Summer Lightning,” is a finalist in the Best Young Adult Novel category in the Romance Writers of America’s RITA contest.

Douglas Gilbert of Boy Scout Troop 252 in Silver Creek and Thomas Johnson of Boy Scout Troop 254 of Dunkirk are local scouts taking part in the trek to the Philmount Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. They flew from Buffalo to Denver, Colo., where they will embark on a two-day bus tour into southern Colorado before arriving at the Ranch for their 12-day high adventure experience. The two scouts are among 12 from the Allegheny Highland Council Boy Scouts of America who are participating in the trek. Adult supervisor is Marc Wilcox of Jamestown.

The major fundraiser for Lake Shore Hospital in Irving, “Hi Neighbor Day,” is being planned. Committee members include Mrs. Fred Feltz, publicity chairman; Mrs. Richard Millar, assistant chairman; and Mrs. Norman Benthan, general chairman.

More than 100 youths in Dunkirk and Fredonia have signed up for the Dunkirk Recreation Commission’s junior sailing program.

Twenty years ago – 1994

To comply with federal law, the Dunkirk Board of Education must ban smoking inside the schools by Dec. 26 of this year. This is in accordance with the Pro-Children Act of 1994 that says there is to be no smoking permitted in any school building that houses structural programs for children. The state has pushed the law further by proposing legislation that would included the campus inside and outside being smoke free. The board is currently deciding whether to ban smoking from the campus as well.

Fredonia actress Patricia Carreras once lost 20 pounds for a part in a play. Now she has had a 20-inch sheaf of hair cut off for a part in the Buffalo production of “Hamlet.” Directed by Saul Elkin with original music by Ray Leslie, “Hamlet” marks the ninth season of Shakespeare in Delaware Park.

Tubby Wallace and his orchestra drew a huge crowd to the Rainbow Inn over the weekend. Submarine sandwiches are available for 55 cents at The Bomber House, 9 Eagle St, Fredonia.

As state Lt. Gov. Stanley Lundine made his way about Dunkirk recently, he wasn’t alone. A group of about 10 protesters hounded him from the moment he arrived for his speaking engagement at the Sheraton Harborfront Inn until after he left the Ralston Purina plant. Three environmentalist-minded groups from Fredonia, Westfield and West Valley banded together to protest the state’s proposed reopening of the West Valley Nuclear Waste Facility as a radioactive dump.

Westfield School Superintendent Robert Olczak presented a plaque to Marilyn Bertges, who was selected for the school’s first annual Teacher of the Year Award. The selection was made by a committee representing faculty, board of education and school administration. Mrs. Bertges has been a Westfield school teacher for the past 11 years. Formerly a reading teacher, she currently teaches sixth grade. Mrs. Berges resides on Route 5 in the town of Dunkirk with her husband, Jerry.

Twenty years ago – 1994

It appeared a good possibility this morning that the former Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk will become Chautauqua County government’s unified north county office building. However, the OBSERVER has learned it could cost the county upwards of $1 million to acquire and adapt the building. This could be offset by savings on money now paid to lease several offices in the Dunkirk area and by the sale of the former Lucas Avenue DiRusso building, a one-time supermarket.

Fredonia artist Ruth Shokoff is among the artists represented in the 27th annual Chautauqua National Exhibition of American Art. Her drawing, “Penelope’s Web at Dusk” was one of 91 works selected from among 2,041 entries from 49 states. The juror for the show was Randolph Williams of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Arson is suspected as the cause of a recent fire on the 300 block of Main Street in Dunkirk’s business section which caused around $100,000 in damages. Over 3,000 persons gathered to watch the fire.

The Friday Fish Fry at St. Hedwig’s Annual Festival in Dunkirk is 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for children.

Twenty years ago – 1994

Parishioners of St. Patrick’s Church on Central Avenue in Brocton marked the 50th anniversary of the church at that location last month. The church was constructed in June 1944 after the original building on Pullman Street was lost to a fire in 1943. Bishop Edward Head took part in the dedication and blessing of the new stained-glass entrance window which was donated in memory of Milo Parisio and designed by Anthony Riforgiat. The Rev. Robert G. Beiter, who was appointed pastor of St. Patrick’s on July 22, 1986 concelebrated the anniversary Mass of Thanksgiving. with Bishop Head.

Liberty National Bank recently announced the promotion of Dunkirk native Daniel Drozdiel as assistant manager at the Hamburg office. Mr. Drozdiel began his career with Liberty in 1983 in the advanced management training program. He holds a degree in economics from Buffalo State University and serves as an advisor to the Lake Shore Central High School Chapter of Junior Achievement of WNY. He resides in Silver Creek with his wife, Shirley.

The Historical Society of Dunkirk has started a drive for funds for a monument to mark the first New York and Erie Railroad train in Dunkirk.

Miss Yvonne Morrison, 17, newly-graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School, is July’s Calendar Girl of the Month. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvyn Morrison of Martin Wright Road, Westfield.

Every Sunday afternoon at the Ed Egan Little League Complex on Clinton Avenue in Fredonia, boys and girls ages 7 to 21 who are physically challenged play ball in the Challenger League. The kids have fun and no score is kept. Begun locally in 1991 by Ben Cerrie, the Little League district administrator for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, the Challenger League welcomes any handicapped child from the area to join in the games. The program is sponsored by the Moose Lodge and Fredonia Little League, so no fees are charged.

A Dunkirk man has been chosen as one of the coaches for Chautauqua County’s 16-18 Babe Ruth World Series Team with the event set for Aug. 18-25 at College Stadium, the home of the NY-P League Jamestown Expos. Frank Corsoro of the Dunkirk Moniuszko Club will serve as an assistant coach. The 30-year-old Corsoro, a 1971 Dunkirk High School graduate, has been coaching baseball at various levels since he was 16.

More than 100 friends, community members, colleagues and relatives attended a dinner-dance honoring Judge Raul Figueroa, a former Dunkirk resident. The event was held at the Kosciuszko Club in Dunkirk and was hosted by Hispanics Organized for Progress and Education (HOPE). Currently, Judge Figueroa is the only city court judge in the state to serve on the State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics. The third Monday in January will be an official state holiday in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On July 5, Gov. Mario Cuomo signed a law designating the day to honor the civil rights leader, who was assassinated in 1968. The state has honored King on his birthdate for several years, and the official holiday allows state workers to take the day off in place of another holiday.

The Chautauqua County Legislature recently approved a resolution “encouraging the use of protective bicycle helmets” after refusing to make such use mandatory for all ages. State law requires that children under 14 wear the headgear. A bicycle helmet education program will be instituted with the expectation that local fraternal, business and civic organizations will sponsor such programs and supply helmets for riders over the age of 14 if they are unable to buy their own.

Officials at the M. Wile and Co. plant in Dunkirk announced a major expansion and modernization program that will mean 110 new jobs over the next four to six months. President and CEO Homi Patel noted that the company selected Dunkirk over various other locations, including a North Carolina facility, in part because 94 percent of the local plant’s 218 employees recently voted to accept a cash bonus or company stock in return for a 50-cent per hour wage reduction. The company, in turn, agreed to transfer all pant and vest production from a plant in North Carolina to Dunkirk.

Robert W. Lyczkowski, a chemical engineer in the Energy Systems Division of Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Ill., has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Mr. Lyczkowski has authored 47 technical publications and holds two patents. A 1959 Dunkirk High School graduate, he is the son of Joanne Lyczkowski of Dunkirk and the late Walter Lyczkowski.

A Jamestown couple has purchased the West Sheridan Furniture Store from A.J. Van Poortvliet, its founder and owner since 1957. Ronald and Glenda Barber of 129 Niagara St., Jamestown took control of the store on July 1. Mr. Van Poortvliet, who will retire, said he received several offers for the Sheridan store since he put it on the market last fall. Mr. Barber, a Dunkirk native, has a background in furniture sales, including a 17-year employment with Caprino’s of Jamestown.

Liberty Bank announced the appointment of Charles Frazita as manager of its Dunkirk-Fredonia Plaza office.

Wilson D. Bailey, who has been with the Fred Koch Brewery in Dunkirk for 32 years, has been appointed district sales manager.

David Penharlow, vice president of Pen’s Parts Service Inc., announced that the company’s Fredonia and Dunkirk locations will be consolidated into a soon-to-be constructed superstore called The Parts Store. The new facility, based on a superstore concept designed by Napa Auto Parts in Atlanta, will be located on Route 60 in the town of Dunkirk, between 84 Lumber and Jamestown Community College’s north county campus. Construction begins this month with an estimated completion date by Thanksgiving. For the past 49 years, Pen’s Auto Parts has done business at its flagship Fredonia location.

John Carr, a Dunkirk High School alumnus, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of WNYC, New York City’s public radio station and the oldest in the country, on July 9. At WNYC, John is host of the Masterwork Hour – the oldest program of classical music in America. Mr. Carr has had roles in several movies, including “Hot Rock” and “The Front.” He is also scheduled to appear in “Turk 182” with Timothy Hutton and Robert Culp and “Falling in Love” with Meryl Streep and Robert DeNiro. John is the son of Mrs. Margaret Carr of East Lake Road, Dunkirk.

The upcoming Joie Chitwood Auto Thrill Show at the Chautauqua County Fair will feature a 25-foot space-like rocket that will blast a 1964 sedan onto a platform about 85 feet away.

The Rev. Douglas M. Knopp of Fredonia has spent 25 years in the ministry. Currently celebrating his Silver Jubilee, he was ordained June 20, 1969, in the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church. A celebration in honor of his service was held Sunday, June 19, at the First United Methodist Church, 25 Church St., Fredonia. Several members of the Assembly of Christian Churches in Dunkirk will provide special music.

The Dunkirk Common Council has unanimously approved a resolution calling on the state to locate a proposed grape industry exhibition and promotion center in the city’s harborfront area. The resolution notes that Chautauqua County, with 19,644 acres of grapes, is the largest grape-producing county in the state. The state Assembly last week approved a bill calling for a small excise tax on all wines sold in the state in order to fund an institute that would do grape research and promote their use.

During a legislative conference of the New York State Professional Firefighters, Arthur Gestwicki of Dunkirk met with Gov. Malcolm Wilson and Arthur Sullivan of Local 282 Buffalo and vice president of the State Firefighters.

Silver Creek Mayor James DeJohn was congratulated at the village board meeting for his appointment as president of the New York State Conference of Mayors and Other Municipal Officers.

R. J. Graziano of 63 Fairview Ave., Dunkirk, recently discovered a 35-inch snake within five feet of his house. It appeared to be a garden snake and before Mr. Graziano killed it, the reptile raised its head six inches off the ground and hissed. The snake was apparently sunning itself when Mr. Graziano hit it in the head with a hoe, breaking his hoe in the process. He then called the Dunkirk animal control officer.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Westfield Health Care Center were held July 3 at noon. Located at the intersection of Cass and Jefferson streets in Westfield, the health care center will be a 120-bed multilevel long-term care facility. It will house 80 nursing beds and 40 intermediate care beds. The total estimated project cost is $5 million. The facility will employ about 110 full- and part-time people. Construction is expected to take about a year

A memorial garden has been dedicated in honor of the late Thomas M. Heary, former principal of Fredonia High School, by the Fredonia High School Parent Teacher Student Association. Mr. Heary, who died Jan. 16, 1993, had been principal since 1972. The garden is located at the entrance to the high school, with a brick walkway that leads up to a plaque dedicated in Mr. Heary’s name that reads: “In Memoriam: teacher, counselor, principal, administrator, PTSA life member, adviser, leader, gentleman, friend.” The garden contains various types of trees and bushes.

Calendar Girl for the month of July is Heidi Kutsche, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Heil of Gerry and Baldur Kutsche of Westfield. Heidi, who graduated in June, was in the top 10 percent of her class academically at Cassadaga Valley Central School. She was selected as queen of Gerry Fire Department and will compete for the county title at the Stockton Gala Days. Heidi attended the Barbizon School of Modeling. She will attend Jamestown Business College in the fall, majoring in administrative secretarial courses.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has rejected a plan to build a temporary protective breakwall in Dunkirk Harbor.

Poles in the village of Fredonia were being painted red and white in order to make residents more aware of where fire boxes are located.

Twenty years ago – 1994

As a farewell gesture, students and staff filled the office of retiring Brocton Central School Superintendent Richard Gloss with various colored and signed balloons. As a memento of his years at Brocton, the Brocton School Board presented Mr. Gloss with a deacon’s bench that has graced his office. The bench is believed to be part of the original equipment purchased for the high school library when the school was built. “This is a great sendoff,” Mr. Gloss said.

New York State today became the 50th state to require photo drivers’ licenses and motorists will be charged an extra $1.50 for the privilege, making the cost of a four-year license $17.50. The 99 Department of Motor Vehicle offices and county clerks’ offices across the state are ready to begin taking pictures of everyone seeking a new or renewed license.

Fisherman Thomas Triaga, age 14, of Fredonia, hooked a 32-inch catfish off the seawall near the Dunkirk Yacht Club. He used a worm for bait.

The General Excellence Award was presented by St. Ann’s Society and Catholic Daughters to Thomas Zajas and Martha Schrantz of the eighth-grade graduating class of Sacred Heart School in Dunkirk.

Nathan Stock, son of William and Nancy Stock of Forestville, has been named valedictorian of this year’s graduating class at Forestville High School. In August, Nathan will attend Colgate University where he will major in international relations with a minor in Spanish. Class salutatorian was Mary Borowczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Borowczyk of Webster Road, Fredonia. This fall, she will attend JCC with plans to transfer to Brockport State to pursue a degree in sports medicine.

The state Assembly rushed to close the spring session by voting to allow grocery stores to sell “wine coolers.” Gov. Mario Cuomo sought to allow grocery stores to sell New York-produced wine coolers, a mixture of wine and fruit juice, in an effort to boost the financially ailing wine industry. The measure allows the wine cooler sales for a two-year experiment.

Ninety-year-old “Grandpa Florida,” also known as William Vincent, has arrived in Fredonia for his annual summer visit.
