Twenty years ago — 1997

Representing the Northern Chautauqua County Boxing Club, 11-year-old Jason Quinones is headed for the National Silver Gloves Championship next month in Kansas City. He became the Region 1 60-pound open division junior champ last week in Saratoga Springs with a 3-2 decision over Jose Lopez, who was 20-1 before the fight. Jason has won five straight fights since the first time he stepped into the ring last June at Super Show 1 in Dunkirk, including a 3-0 decision over Edwin Viera on Dec. 7 for the New York State title. The boxing club is a part of Chautauqua Opportunities Inc.

Thirty years ago — 1987

The Fredonia Little League Building Committee has announced plans for their kickoff banquet Jan. 24 at the Holiday Inn to publicly present a 4-foot-by-8-foot model of the proposed Ed Egan Memorial Complex, which will consist of three baseball fields and will be located on the property behind the old Tops Supermarket on East Main Street in Fredonia. The development of the Egan Complex is an absolute necessity, the league said, if the Little League program is to continue as a viable activity for the children of the area. At the present time, there are 28 teams (both boys’ baseball and girls’ softball) with only three fields available.

Forty years ago — 1977

Plans are in the works to renovate the Minute Man gasoline station at 379-385 Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk. The plans call for the demolition of existing buildings at the station and construction of a canopy over the gas pumps. Cost of the project is estimated at $50,000.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Elizabeth Dahl, an American Field Service student from Sweden, is shown with an exhibit of 12 pieces of glassware which were loaned to Dunkirk High School by the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C. A Dunkirk High senior, Elizabeth is staying with the Newell McCroskey family on West Lake Road in Dunkirk.
