Twenty years ago — 1997

Pine Valley Central School bus driver Roxanne Moore received a plaque which recognized her “quick thinking and quick action in an emergency situation” which occurred Dec. 4. On that day. Mrs. Moore was driving an empty bus on Route 83 near Center Road when she observed a tractor-trailer lose control and hit another car. She quickly stopped the bus on the hill and put the bus’ flashing emergency lights on to warn oncoming traffic. She then radioed for help and alerted the victims emergency vehicles were on their way.

Thirty years ago — 1987

The Dunkirk Urban Renewal Agency has granted preferred developer status to Dr. Kaushik Damania to develop plans to build a medical office building on the last vacant lot owned by the agency. The property requested by Dr. Damania is located on East Fourth Street between St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School and a building at 86 E. Fourth St. The 10,362 square foot parcel has been used as a parking lot for many years and carries a price tag of $1 per square foot.

Forty years ago — 1977

Francisco Vega of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Dunkirk and Neil Carlson of St. John the Evangelist Church in Sinclairville, were among the 22 laymen to recently be installed as acolytes by the Most Rev. Edward D. Head during a service at Our Lady of the Rosary Monastery in Buffalo.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Arthur Wakolee, a full-blooded Saux-Fox Indian who came to the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation in 1916, has co-authored a book with Patricia Keyes entitled, “Mocassin Paths.” The first printing of 3,000 copies has been sold out and more are being printed by the Desert Book Co. of Salt Lake City.
