Brian Waller was recently named the winner of the Black History Essay Contest held at School 3 in Dunkirk during February (Black History Month). Brian, a fourth-grader, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Waller of King Street, Dunkirk.
Forty years ago – 1977
The first-year operating cost for the proposed new mammoth Niagara Mohawk electric generating plant in the Dunkirk area is $590 million, according to testimony filed at a public hearing at Dunkirk Hose Co. No. 1. For $590 million, you could operate 118 cities the size of Dunkirk or 12 counties the size of Chautauqua. The plant itself will cost $1.5 billion to build and will burn low sulfur coal shipped in from the Far East.
