Thirty years ago — 1987

The economic impact of the recent movie filming in the Gowanda and South Dayton area is difficult to measure accurately, but most estimates indicate “in excess of $75,000 was spent in the Gowanda and South Dayton area.” The economic impact of the movie production is “all the more significant if viewed in terms of future promotions of the area.” During the recent filming, Paramount Pictures reportedly booked 110 hotel rooms.

Forty years ago — 1977

Joe Gaken, a Cardinal Mindszenty High School alumnus, has been cast as Dr. Wyatt in the Oswego State University College production of “Witness for the Prosecution.” A sophomore majoring in communication studies, Joe was recently lauded by audiences for his performance in the college’s experimental theater production of “Marat Sade.” CMHS students and supporters remember Joe and his contributions to so many school musicals. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Florian Gaken of Middle Road, Dunkirk.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Dirk Irish of Silver Creek had his first haircut recently, the honor performed by Frank Abbate, a barber in the village since 1914. Mr. Abbate, 86, said he started barbering in 1892, when he made $2 a week and board.
