Thirty years ago — 1987

The annual St. Hyacinth’s School sports awards banquet was held to honor the Sages basketball players and the Sagettes cheerleaders. The basketball team finished the season with a record of 8-2 and fared well in tournament play. The cheerleaders won third place at the Longacres Tournament in Buffalo. Special awards were presented to Sagettes captains Jennifer Slojkowski and Missy McAfee and cocaptains Trisha Hansen and Tammy Adamowicz. For the Sages, David Meyer received the Most Valuable Player award. Phillip Kornacki was named Most Improved Player.

Forty years ago — 1977

Warm sunny weather, talented craftsmen and artists, in cooperation with the Chautauqua County Fair Association, recently brought to Dunkirk a two-day Arts and Crafts Festival that attracted more than 1,900 visitors to the Fairgrounds. Betty Marsh, general chairman, and H. K. Leworthy, Fair secretary and manager, reported “many compliments” on the show itself and the quality of merchandise displayed and offered for sale.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Airman David A. Apthorpe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl R. Apthorpe of Franklin Avenue, Dunkirk has been selected for technological training at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., as a U.S. Air Force munitions specialist.
