Twenty years ago — 1998

There is only one winner of the OBSERVER Football Fever Contest this week. Dunkirk resident Dave Lajewski is this week’s winner. Last week, four people were declared the winners after the Monday Night tie-breaker failed to produce a winner. Mr. Lajewski picked 15 of the 16 games listed from last week. The lone game he missed on — Westfield over Frewsburg. Frewsburg defeated Westfield by one point.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Home wine competition winners at the New York State Fair have been announced. Out of nearly 250 entries, two Forestville residents received medals. David Shain of Route 39 was awarded a gold medal for his 1987 Sweet Concord. Richard Walker, also of Route 39, received a silver medal for his 1987 Niagara Catawba Blend and two bronze medals for a 1987 Sparkling Seyval Niagara Blend and a 1987 Foch, Baco Noir. Christi Merritt of Merritt Estate Winery Inc. in Forestville served on a panel of 12 judges for the competition.

Forty years ago — 1978

Ralston Purina Co. recently announced plans for a multi-million dollar expansion project at its pet food plant in the east Town of Dunkirk. The project is expected to begin next spring with completion scheduled for late 1979. The expansion project, the second in the plant the began operations just six years ago this month, will be quite extensive and will involve the installation of new production equipment and building additions. The expansion is expected to create new jobs at the plant which currently employs 250.

Fifty years ago –1968

Mrs. Anthony Pelletter received the 1968 Woman of the Year award given by the Silver Creek Business and Professional Women’s Club at the ninth annual Employer-Employee Dinner held recently. She was cited for her service to the community and to the BPW organization. A licensed real estate agent, she conducts a weekly local radio program. Guest speaker for the event was Raymond D. Angle Jr., senior resident agent for the FBI’s Jamestown office.
