Twenty years ago — 1998

Dunkirk’s Cliffstar Corp. has expanded its private label juice business with the purchase of a Kansas City, Mo., company. Cliffstar and Speaco Foods Inc. jointly announced Cliffstar had purchased Speaco’s private label juice business in Kansas City. Cliffstar plans to shift the bottling operations and production lines to its Joplin, Mo., manufacturing facility located less than 200 miles away. Cliffstar, which marks its 100th anniversary in 1999, recently launched a three-year multi-million dollar investment plan for new processing and storage equipment at its Dunkirk facility.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Felix Jacobs of Dunkirk was recently recognized by Kiwanis International, which selected him as the 788th recipient of the prestigious George F. Hixson Fellow Award. Named in honor of Kiwanis’ first international president, the award was presented to Mr. Jacobs at the state convention earlier this year. In December 1960, Mr. Jacobs, along with 24 other men, officially formed the Kiwanis Club of Dunkirk. He is the only charter member still living. A Kiwanis Legion of Honor member, he was twice named Kiwanian of the Year.

Forty years ago — 1978

Darlene Smith, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith, 27 Center St., Forestville has been selected as Student of the Week. A senior at Forestville Central School, Darlene has served as junior class president and is now president of both the senior class and the student council. She has been a cheerleader for four years and member of the Choraleers and Future Homemakers of America. Darlene plans to attend Buffalo State University College where she will major in economics.

Fifty years ago — 1968

A Certificate of Commendation from the Dunkirk Common Council was presented by First Ward Councilman Clem Worosz to William Hagberg for saving the life of a man injured in an automobile accident Oct. 15. Mr. Hagberg, a member of Dunkirk Hose Co. No. 1 and the fire department’s emergency squad, has been credited with saving the life of another fireman injured at the Southwestern Volunteer Firemen’s Convention in Gowanda by using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and first aid. He has been nominated for Fireman of the Year honors.
