Twenty years ago — 1999

The Rev. Carlton J. Westfield was installed earlier this month as pastor of St. Anthony Church in Fredonia. The main celebrant at the installation Mass was the Rev. Patrick H. Elis, episcopal vicar of Northern Chautauqua County. Until reassigned by Bishop Henry J. Mansell, Fr. Westfield was pastor of both Our Lady of Loreto Parish in Falconer and Our Lady of Victory Parish in Frewsburg. A Buffalo native, he is a graduate of Bishop Timon High School and earned his master of divinity degree at St. John Vianney Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1971.

Thirty years ago — 1989

State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Mattina late this morning led a group of interested parties to take a personal look at the controversial “Green Wall” on Route 20 in the Town of Portland. Owners Howard and Laura Green claim the wall, built perhaps as early as the mid-19th century, is not on state property and is not a hazard. Judge Mattina stated, based on the papers plus today’s oral arguments and the onsite wall inspection, he will call a hearing for later.

Forty years ago — 1979

Thomas M. Crea, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Crea of 106 Fairview Ave., Dunkirk has been selected Student of the Week. A senior at Cardinal Mindszenty High School, he is president of both the senior class and National Honor Society as well as vice president of the Student Council. Tom received letters in JV and varsity football, basketball and baseball. He is a serious contender for an Army ROTC scholarship. Tom plans to attend either ther U.S. Air Force Academy or Cornell University to major in engineering.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Miss Dunkirk-Fredonia 1969, Francine Heitman, a freshman at Fredonia State University College, was chosen from among 22 contestants in the annual pageant held at the Dunkirk Junior High School auditorium to represent the two communities in the Miss New York State Pageant. Sponsored by Dunkirk Radiator, she won a $300 scholarship and a trip to Olean.
